WAGNER Rail has expanded the WAGNER Group FirExting® portfolio with the launch of Water Mist Compact, a new water mist-based fire suppression system designed specifically for rail applications.
The compact solution has been developed to provide high fire suppression performance while reducing installation space, weight and maintenance requirements.
It is particularly suited to passenger areas in rolling stock, including standard and sleeper carriages, onboard kitchens and restroom facilities.
Efficient Water Mist Technology
Water mist systems work by releasing micro-fine water droplets that evaporate rapidly when exposed to heat.
This process removes heat energy from a fire, enabling fast and effective suppression while using minimal amounts of water.
According to WAGNER Rail, the new Water Mist Compact system delivers the same suppression performance as larger systems while offering greater flexibility and easier integration into rail vehicles.
The technology also helps minimise secondary damage following a fire.
The fine water droplets leave no residue and allow operators to return affected areas to service quickly after an incident.
Innovative Compact Design
A key innovation of the Water Mist Compact system is its integrated container design.
For the first time, both the extinguishing water and the nitrogen gas required for atomisation are housed within a single container.
This eliminates much of the additional piping and components traditionally required in water mist systems.
The design reduces installation space requirements, lowers overall system weight and minimises the number of interfaces with the vehicle.
It also simplifies planning and installation during both new-build and retrofit projects.
Following activation, the compact containers can be replaced quickly and stocked as ready-to-use spare parts.
Minimising water damage
Dr. Markus Müller, Managing Director of WAGNER Rail GmbH, said: “Thanks to their low water consumption, water mist systems cause very little secondary damage, making them ideal for areas where operations need to resume quickly after a fire.
“The fine droplets leave no residue. And after a fire, the system is quickly back up and running.
“Our latest development goes one step further: it is our smallest and lightest water mist system. It can be installed in a more compact space while delivering the same performance.
“Both planning and integration into the vehicle are simpler than with conventional systems.”
“Ultimately, what matters most to operators is a comprehensive package that combines safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
“Our technology stands out for its high effectiveness, low impact on the interior, and excellent retrofitability. This makes it ideal for both existing fleets and new vehicle designs.”
The company has already begun implementing its first projects using Water Mist Compact and will showcase the new fire suppression technology at InnoTrans in Berlin from 22 to 25 September.
