The British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association (BAFSA), in partnership with SKILLcard, part of the BESA Group, has announced new mandatory refresher training requirements for fire sprinkler installers.
Coming into effect on 1 June 2027, the changes aim to strengthen ongoing professional competence across the fire safety industry.
The requirements will ensure installers maintain current technical knowledge, awareness of relevant legislation and understanding of industry best practice throughout their careers.
New requirements for SKILLcard renewal
Under the revised framework, experienced fire sprinkler installers will no longer be able to renew their SKILLcard solely through existing qualifications and standard health and safety testing.
Instead, applicants must successfully complete a verified, industry approved refresher qualification before submitting their renewal application.
Installers will also need to complete a short accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.
The additional requirements are intended to demonstrate that individuals continue to meet relevant competence standards beyond their initial qualifications.
Supporting ongoing competence in fire safety
The introduction of mandatory refresher training reflects the industry’s focus on maintaining professional knowledge and practical competence.
By requiring installers to update their understanding of current legislation and industry practices, BAFSA and SKILLcard aim to support consistent standards throughout an installer’s working career.
Transition period for employers and installers
BAFSA and SKILLcard have established a transition framework to help employers and installers prepare for the changes.
A six month notice period is being provided ahead of implementation, allowing affected workers to understand the revised renewal process and arrange appropriate training.
Installers whose SKILLcards expire after 1 June 2027 are encouraged to review the updated criteria and plan their training requirements in advance.
The new framework will make refresher qualifications and accredited CPD essential components of the SKILLcard renewal process for experienced fire sprinkler installers.
Ruth Oliver, BAFSA Head of Training, said: “Our primary aim is to ensure that every cardholder has access to up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and industry best practice.
“Introducing a structured refresher programme provides a consistent approach to maintaining competence and supports the high standards expected across the fire sprinkler industry.”
Jill Nicholls, Director of Competence and Compliance at BESA, said “Competence cannot simply be demonstrated once and then assumed. It needs to be maintained as standards, regulations and working practices evolve.
“We have been pleased to work with BAFSA through SKILLcard to support this important change. It will help experienced fire sprinkler installers keep their knowledge current and provide a clear way to demonstrate ongoing competence and compliance, ultimately helping to strengthen standards across this critical sector.”
