Bipartisan legislation designed to speed up the development of PFAS-free firefighting turnout gear has been introduced in the US Senate.
The PFAS Alternatives Act (S.4844) was introduced by Senators Martin Heinrich, John Curtis, Peter Welch and Deb Fischer.
Endorsed by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), the legislation would fund research and development into next-generation turnout gear that is free from PFAS, accommodates a wider range of body types and incorporates a visual indicator showing when the gear requires cleaning.
Strong bipartisan support
The bill was introduced with 14 original cosponsors, demonstrating broad bipartisan backing.
S.4844 also serves as the companion bill to H.R. 3184, which was introduced last year by Representatives Debbie Dingell and Sam Graves.
Funding next-generation turnout gear
The PFAS Alternatives Act would provide $25 million annually over the next four fiscal years to support the development of safe and practical alternatives to existing turnout gear materials and designs.
The legislation also gives firefighters a central role in the research and development process, helping to ensure future protective clothing meets the operational needs of those who use it.
Tackling firefighter cancer risks
Firefighters are regularly exposed to carcinogens during emergency incidents and are 14% more likely to die from certain cancers than the general population.
Although PFAS chemicals were originally incorporated into turnout gear because of their heat-resistant properties, research has linked these “forever chemicals” to a range of health concerns, including cancer, kidney disease, reproductive damage and other adverse health effects.
