London Fire Brigade has expanded its zero-emission fleet with the introduction of its first fully electric large goods vehicles at the Operational Support Centre (OSC) and a new fleet of Volvo XC40 electric training cars. The move marks a significant step in the Brigade’s wider Carbon Net Zero strategy and supports the Mayor of London’s ambition to achieve a zero-carbon city by 2030.
Following two years of successful trials, the Brigade’s Fleet Liaison Equipment and Engineering Team has deployed two 16-tonne Renault Trucks E-Tech D electric lorries to replace diesel vehicles that have served the capital for more than twenty years. The new LGVs will continue delivering essential equipment across London and will be available to respond to incidents when required. Each vehicle incorporates real-time performance and efficiency monitoring, allowing the Brigade to evaluate how electric technology performs in operational conditions and shape future fleet investment.
Alongside the new LGVs, eight Volvo XC40 electric vehicles have replaced hybrid and petrol cars previously used for blue-light driver training. Deployed across training centres in Ruislip, Beckton and Croydon, these vehicles make London Fire Brigade the first fire and rescue service in the UK to operate a fully electric training fleet.

By investing in electric training cars and LGVs, we are not only meeting our own sustainability commitments but also setting an example for others to follow. These innovations are vital in reducing our carbon footprint, improving air quality, and helping London reach its net zero goals.”
The Brigade continues to push forward with wider sustainability projects. Its Zero Emission Pumping Appliance (ZEPA1) is undergoing operational trials at Hammersmith Fire Station, while the organisation has already cut CO₂ emissions by 59 per cent since 1990 and now generates over ten per cent of its energy on-site from renewable sources.
