At least 27 people have been killed after a fire broke out in a bar in Bangkok.
The blaze began close to the stage area of a bar called Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao in the Chatuchak district of the Thai capital on July 12.
Victims sheltered in bathroom
Initial investigations indicate the fire could have started as a result of an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner.
A band called Thotsakan had been performing when the fire broke out. Two of the band’s members were killed in the incident whilst a third remains unaccounted for.
Firefighters found most of the victims in a bathroom where they had sought shelter.
They were able to bring the flames under control within half an hour.
Prime Minister makes statement
Nine men and 18 women were killed whilst 73 were injured, including 25 who are in a criticial condition.
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, visited the scene.
He told reporters: “Right now, we have been able to bring the deceased bodies out. For that, there were already 27 bodies.
“The rest were sent to hospitals already, and we are still checking their conditions.”
