Daren Pool is a senior fire detection and life safety professional with decades of experience across the UK non domestic built environment. His career combines project delivery, industry leadership and involvement in the development of standards governing fire detection and alarm systems.
He is Chairman of the Fire and Security Association (FSA) where his priorities include competence, professional standards, skills development and strengthening the industry’s engagement with regulators and other stakeholders.
British Standards and fire detection expertise
Pool is an active member of the British Standards Institution FSH 12 committee, contributing to the development and review of UK fire detection and fire alarm standards.
His work provides direct experience of how standards are developed, interpreted and adapted in response to emerging risks and operational experience. His approach places particular emphasis on professional judgement, accountability and the proportionate application of standards where guidance does not provide a straightforward answer.
Professional competence and industry leadership
Pool was among the first individuals in the UK to complete the EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems. His qualification was presented by EAL Managing Director Al Parkes and Dame Judith Hackitt. The qualification provides a route to the ECS Fire Systems Technician Gold Card and was developed to support competency requirements within the sector.
He holds ECS Black and Gold cards and maintains professional memberships across engineering, fire and safety institutions.
His work focuses on fire detection and alarm systems, professional competence, standards led life safety and defensible decision making.
As FSA Chair, Pool has also highlighted the need for clearer accountability, properly qualified professionals and better defined design requirements across fire and life safety systems.
