Adam Barowy is a Principal Research Engineer for the Fire Safety Research Institute, FSRI, part of UL Research Institutes, with experience spanning commercial fire research, fire protection, energy storage hazards and firefighting research.
Before joining FSRI, Barowy spent nine years working in commercial fire research. His work included developing UL Standards and Test Methods, evaluating emerging fire hazards and assessing new fire protection solutions.
Research into energy storage fire and explosion hazards
Barowy advanced UL’s capabilities for characterising the thermal, fire and explosion hazards associated with energy storage technologies.
He led the technical development of UL 9540A and UL’s large scale energy storage system fire testing programme, contributing to methods for evaluating the fire safety challenges associated with energy storage technologies.
Full scale fire testing and firefighting research
Prior to his work at UL, Barowy worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST. There, he conducted full scale structure fire field experiments intended to support improved firefighting tactics.
His work also included reconstructing line of duty death and injury fire incidents and evaluating firefighting equipment, providing experience across both fire research and operational firefighting considerations.
Barowy also has direct experience within the fire service. While completing his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he volunteered with the Amherst Fire Department.
He later graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a Master of Science in fire protection engineering.
His professional background combines fire protection engineering, experimental fire research, energy storage system testing, standards development and practical experience within the fire service.
