Correct handling of firefighter PPE continues after equipment has been washed. Drying turnout gear efficiently is important for returning equipment to operational use while limiting unnecessary mechanical wear on protective materials.
PODAB developed its ProLine FC20 drying cabinet specifically for PPE used in sectors including fire and rescue. The cabinet can accommodate up to six complete sets of turnout gear, with six positions for interchangeable hangers incorporating integrated airflow.
Inside out drying for firefighter PPE
Rather than using mechanical action, the FC20 circulates heated air through interchangeable hangers while simultaneously distributing air throughout the cabinet. This dual drying process provides inside out drying and removes moisture without the friction associated with mechanical movement.
Different hanger configurations allow the cabinet to accommodate protective clothing, boots and gloves. Door mounted hook racks can provide additional capacity for smaller items. The cabinet can therefore be configured according to the equipment being processed.
The FC20 also incorporates a Humidity Tracking System, with sensors monitoring temperature and humidity. The system detects moisture levels and automatically stops the drying process when the equipment reaches the required level of dryness, helping control drying time and energy consumption.
Automatic and manual programmes are available, alongside a preset start time. Safety features include double overheat protection and a cool down mode at the end of the programme. The cabinet is manufactured from powder coated galvanised steel and includes interior lighting.
Drying capabilities
With six suits fitted with membranes or liners, PODAB specifies a drying time of 166 minutes. For six suits without membranes or liners, the stated drying time is 85 minutes.
For fire services managing repeated PPE cleaning cycles, the FC20 provides a dedicated method for controlled drying while supporting equipment turnaround and reducing mechanical stress on protective clothing.
