Twenty firefighters were taken to hospital following an industrial unit fire which caused an explosion in Essex.
At its height, more than 100 firefighters were deployed to help tackle the fire at Highlands Farm, near East Hanningfield.
The fire broke out on July 24 at 4.50pm. Around an hour later, an explosion occurred inside one of the units which contained fertiliser.
Major incident
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident.
Chief Fire Officer, Rick Hylton, said of the 20 firefighters sent to hospital, four suffered minor injuries and the remainder were sent as a precaution.
Giving a statement the following day, he said: “Yesterday’s incident presented exceptionally challenging and hazardous conditions. Our firefighters demonstrated remarkable professionalism, courage and commitment throughout the response.
“I want to personally thank every firefighter, fire control operator and member of staff who has played a part in this response.”
He added an investigation into the cause of the incident had began.
Post incident monitoring
Firefighters continued to monitor the area over the weekend.
Station Manager Paul Champ said: “Crews have been working throughout the day to make sure secondary fires have been prevented as it’s been windy at the site and lots of fields around us are tinder dry.
“Southend Road remains closed and access to the site is still restricted. We know this is impacting lots of residents and local businesses and we’d like to thank the local community for their continued patience while we work to make the scene safe.
“Recovery information for residents and businesses will be coordinated by Chelmsford City Council.”
