After a fire broke out inside a sweet shop in Mumbai, India, 12 people have died as a direct result of the blaze.
All 12 had actually been rescued by firefighters initially, however on their way to hospital, all 12 succumbed from their injuries, officials stated.
The victims have been reported thus far to have been workers employed by the shop largely, however, other people who were living at the site are also suspected to be dead.
The fire broke out on the 18th December at around 04:00 on the ground floor of the shop, which in turn trapped people in the loft. The heat from the fire was so strong that the loft structure collapsed.
Rescue operations were in full force for a series of days after the fire, according to officials.
Initial reports haven’t given any answers as to what actually caused the fire, however, a lack of safety measures and poor maintenance in general are frequently occurrences in India, and as such, are often to blame. An investigation is ongoing as to discover the cause.
In September, a similar fire broke out at a construction site, also in Mumbai, which killed six people and left several others injured.
