The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week 2026, which will take place from October 4 to 10.
Lithium ion battery safety focus
The campaign will focus on safe charging, storage and use of devices powered by rechargeable lithium ion batteries, including phones, tablets, laptops, tools, toys, e bikes and scooters.
NFPA said damaged or incorrectly charged batteries can overheat, catch fire or explode.
Safe charging advice
Key safety messages include using the charger supplied with a device or one approved by the manufacturer, charging on hard flat surfaces and avoiding beds, couches or pillows where heat can build up.
Users are advised to stop using devices that become very hot, swell, smoke or smell unusual, and to unplug devices once fully charged.
Larger batteries and travel safety
NFPA also advises charging larger items such as e bikes, scooters and power tools outside and away from exits.
When travelling by plane, devices should be kept visible while charging and should not be charged in overhead compartments. E cigarettes and vapes should not be charged on aircraft.
Fire Prevention Week resources
Fire Prevention Week is held across North America each October and is the oldest recorded US public health observance.
Lorraine Carli, Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA, said: “Properly charging devices can significantly reduce the risk of fires and associated hazards.
“Making informed choices and practicing simple habits are critical to these efforts.”
