Dräger safety in action

Dräger helps Derry Airport prioritise safety in action

The City of Derry Airport is northwest Ireland’s largest airport which, at its pre-pandemic peak, provided over 200,000 passenger flights to the UK and southern Europe.  The airport’s fire service provides aircraft safeguarding and an emergency response service for terminal buildings and low-traffic collisions on-site. Today, the modern plastics and polymers found in buildings and aeroplanes as they burn release carcinogens and expose firefighters to a risk of cancer that is some two to four times higher than the general population, and could potentially shorten their life span by up to 20 years.  Accordingly, as safety regulations tighten, fire services across the UK, including the City of Derry Airport, are upgrading their equipment and procedures to protect their crews and reduce cancer mortality rates. The Derry management team assessed many different products to protect their employees. They chose Dräger’s HPSâ Safeguard helmet, for example, because it was extremely fast and easy to use compared to the existing equipment, especially when firefighters also needed respiratory protection equipment. The padded 3-point harness with versatile chin and neck straps, and coupled with an adjustment wheel placed  on the back of the helmet allowed for a safe and easy fit  to any head shape or size and can accommodate users who observed cultural or religious practices. The helmet’s innovative design is such that various  external devices can be affixed to it with ease and enables hands-free operation of thermal imaging cameras, action cams and lamps if required. The team will also be introducing Dräger’s PSSâ AirBoss self-contained breathing apparatus to its firecrews in the near future to prevent inhalation of carcinogenic particulates. With its light weight and best-in-class ergonomics, it will also significantly reduce the physical strain on individuals during a shout. Both the HPSâ Safeguard helmet and the PSSâ AirBoss are suitable for manual and machine washing. They are made with low-absorbent and liquid-repellent materials which take on fewer contaminants. The AirBoss also has a streamlined design to minimise dirt traps. All of this makes regular cleaning and decontamination of PPE required by current regulations extremely easy. Best practice in firefighting is rapidly evolving in response to the latest understanding of cancer mortality and its causes. It is now understood that cancer-causing particles remain in the fibres of PPE and can contaminate other surfaces or people long after an incident takes place.  Today all PPE must be transported back to the workshop on the outside of an appliance to avoid contaminating the interior cab. Special holders and bags must be used to carry them to designated ‘dirty’ or decontamination areas to prevent transferring carcinogens to ‘clean’ kitchens, sleeping areas or other parts of the station. The products will be covered by Dräger’s TotalCare Agreement, which means the crew and its equipment will benefit from maintenance, inspection and preventive care. Gerard McCloskey, Safety and Fire Officer at Derry Airport, says that providing routinely changeable service parts and kits is a significant advantage: “The spares facility will guarantee equipment uptime, and fill short term gaps should the need arise,” he explains. The TotalCare service includes engineer callouts, routine checks and calibrations and advice on equipment best practice. Elizabeth Millward, Marketing Manager at Draeger Safety UK, says protecting from harm in the unique environment posed by the airport is no easy task: “Firefighters must be protected and the progressive approach that the City of Derry Airport is taking towards meeting the new health and safety service standards is particularly impressive. “Alongside our new equipment and Total Care service, many crews are also implementing mechanical cleaning solutions, which can provide further protection from carcinogenic risk. As always, we are committed to providing ‘technology for life’ and help forward thinking services combat the dangers that fire and rescue operations may pose.”   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. sherwin williams firetex

Sherwin-Williams launches intumescent fire protection coating

The new FIRETEX® FX7002 thin-film intumescent fire protection coating from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine is designed to meet the highest performance and aesthetic demands of today’s commercial construction industry. Designed for on-site applications, this solvent-based coating protects structural steel substrates. FIRETEX FX7002 has the broadest range of beam listings on the market for up to a two-hour fire-resistance rating and approved listings for a solvent-based acrylic that are among the industry’s lowest coating thicknesses at that duration for steel beams. Those low thicknesses, combined with the coating’s broad application parameters and high film build capabilities, allow FIRETEX contractors to complete their projects quicker with enhanced peace of mind in the material’s ability to protect steel with proven testing results. In addition, the comprehensive listings enable the protection of a wider range of steel sizes for both restrained and unrestrained assemblies without the need for extrapolation. FIRETEX FX7002 is also undergoing column and hollow steel section (HSS) testing that is intended to match that extended scope for steel columns. FIRETEX FX7002 has high wet film build properties that can reduce the number of coats required. Applicators can build the coating to up to 56 mils wet film thickness (WFT), or 40 mils dry film thickness (DFT), per coat. This higher film build compared to other solvent-based intumescent coatings, combined with lower required DFTs, means applicators can achieve the required protection sooner for most steel with two-hour fire rating requirements. “The extensive certified listing of approved restrained and unrestrained beams for FIRETEX FX7002 is enhanced by the coating’s low thickness requirements,” said Casey Herston, North America Fire Protection Product Manager for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine. “In addition, the low coating thicknesses and higher per-coat film build mean fewer coats need to be applied, saving significant material and labor costs on projects, while also accelerating construction schedules. This means applicators can move to the next project faster, and general contractors can get the subsequent trades on and off projects quicker.” FIRETEX FX7002 offers a broader application window for field applications compared to most commercially available water-based acrylic intumescent products. With its lower temperature application limit, applicators can spray the single-component coating in temperatures that are cooler than what is typical with water-based formulations. That equates to more on-site fireproofing coating days for applicators. In addition, the high volume solids product has outstanding application characteristics and a low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. FIRETEX FX7002 is UL 263-listed and meets the requirements of ANSI/UL 263 and CAN/ULC-S101 for Interior Conditioned Spaces (ICSs), Interior General Purpose use in Design Nos. N627 and Y606. Additional column testing is underway to extensively extend this scope. FIRETEX FX7002 is recommended for use in ICSs without the need for a topcoat, as well as Interior General Spaces with an approved topcoat. It can be used on structural steel for a wide array of buildings, including commercial structures, warehouses, manufacturing plants, hospitals and healthcare facilities, food and beverage plants, pharmaceutical production facilities, EV battery/automotive facilities, semiconductor manufacturing facilities, airports, atriums, hotels, educational buildings and gymnasiums, stadiums, public buildings, convention centers, and iconic structures.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Baltimore bridge collapses, transitioning into recovery mission

Six are presumed to be dead after the fallout of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, Maryland. The US Coast Guard called off the search for the six missing construction workers on Tuesday night, who were filling potholes in the bridge when a cargo ship collided with it and caused the bridge to collapse. The Francis Scott Key bridge was a steel arch opened on 1977, named after poet Francis Scott Key, author of the Star-Spangled Banner song. It carried an estimated 11.5 million vehicles annually and was a critical link for trucks and cars, linking Washington, Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia. The US Coast Guard called off the search for the six missing Tuesday night, who said they presume the men to be dead, as the water below is cold and too much time has passed since the bridge’s collapse – on 2 March, on 1:27 EDT time. It has transitioned from a search and rescue mission to a recovery mission, as the US Coast Guard will try to find all victims of the bridge collapse to bring closure to their families, according to a spokesperson. Today Baltimore Mayor Brandon M Scott tweeted: “Spending the day continuing to help coordinate response this morning, especially with our dedicated dive teams and first responders who are continuing the recovery work.” In his remarks about the bridge collapse, President Joe Biden said he had spoken with Governor Moore, the Mayor of Baltimore and County Executive and would be sending “all the federal resources they need” their way. “Everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident. At this time, we have no other indication — no other reason to believe there was any intentional act here. “Personnel on board the ship were able to alert the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of their vessel, as you all know and have reported. As a result, local authorities were able to close the bridge to traffic before the bridge was struck, which undoubtedly saved lives.” To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. For our Quick Fire Interview in our February edition of International Fire Buyer, we sat down with Petya Simeonova, Regional Sales Manager for Eastern Europe, Hochiki Europe. What does ‘fire protection’ mean to you?  Technology and innovation within the systems we use and regulations that guide us give us the ability to protect people and infrastructure.  What made you want to work in the industry?  The philosophy of a fire protection system, the challenges driven from a diverse range of sites and the responsibility or fire protection and prevention.   If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?  Keep walking young lady you can do anything!   Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?  I was working from home and my cat sent an email to a customer! Thank goodness it was not an important one. My cat always wants to sit on my laptop!  What three traits define you?  Positive, communicative, and never give up.   What’s the most important trend you see today?  The biggest trend is artificial intelligence and how it will affect people!   If you weren’t in the fire industry, what would you be doing?  I cannot remember a time when I was not a salesperson in the fire industry. Perhaps a psychologist?  What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?  I love cats and dogs and I want to start an animal shelter for stray, lost, abandoned, or surrendered animals.    What is one thing you would change in the industry if you could?  Shorten the certification process.  Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  I like my job, so I see myself in the same role or step forward in the export team.
