EN54 Part 13 is a real indicator of fire system performance but is widely misunderstood and sometimes misrepresented. To ensure everyone can check their fire system measures up, Advanced, one of the first companies in Europe to achieve Part 13, has produced a new infographic and 1.5m wall chart that sets out the Part 13 related issues you need to be aware of. EN54-13 is a European standard that ensures: · Optimal fire system performance at all times. · Lives are properly protected in a real fire situation. · Complete peace of mind for specifiers, installers and end-users. The standard involves rigorous third party testing to prove that individual component parts will work together when combined into one system. EN54-13 is currently mandatory in several European countries, but even where not mandated, it is a mark of system performance and reliability. The infographic explains five things you need to know about EN54-13: 1. Approved systems are rigorously tested for compatibility. 2. Approved systems continuously check for faults. 3. ‘Designed to’ is not the same as ‘Approved to.’ 4. Approved panels can save you time and money. 5. Approved systems bring ultimate peace of mind. Each of these five features are expanded upon and clearly explained in the infographic, helping to ensure system performance and integrity – and therefore peace of mind. It can be downloaded or a printed copy ordered from Advanced’s website at: http://www.advancedco.com/fire-systems/axis/axis-en/en54-part-13/order-infographic.aspx. The European Commission has released an inception impact assessment on the proposal for an EU initiative establishing a harmonised certification scheme for alarm systems components. Industry stakeholders and representative bodies can provide the European Commission with an answer to this consultation. Euralarm is part of a group of representative bodies which has been closely involved with the Commission in providing background input into this legislative proposal. The impact assessment follows up on a longstanding proposal by Euralarm for a single market approach to testing, auditing and certification in the security industry as outlined in Euralarm’s Manifesto and which was recently featured in a campaign towards EU Institutions. Trade barriers caused by the absence of a one stop testing scheme are harmful to the competitiveness of European manufacturers of security systems. The lack of a single market reduces economies of scale and, as a result, competitiveness in a global market. Taking part in the EU consultation on harmonised certification for alarm systems is a key result on representation done by Euralarm over the past years. Euralarm’s Security Section, under the lead of Dave Wilkinson as Chairman of the Section, will formulate a Euralarm response to the EU Commission. Following that an approved recommendation will be distributed to all members of the association for their own use. More Fire Buyer coverage: Browse more Event News updates from Fire Buyer.

Kazakhstan has been at the centre of international logistics ever since the times of the famous Silk Road more than 2000 years ago, part of which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, modern logistics connect even the furthest corners of this large Asian country the size of Western Europe, enabling the utilisation of its vast mineral resources and enormous economic potential. Due to this Kazak transport company LLP Continental Logistics is building a network of transportation and logistics centres across the country. One of the first new logistics centres completed by Continental Logistics is in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan which has seen rapid growth and development over the last few decades. Generally seen as a major architectural and engineering achievement, the logistics centre is designed to offer all services required to coordinate the national and international movement of goods. The new complex provides all types of warehousing and logistics services, from export and import to national distribution services in Kazakhstan. Covering 51 hectares, the logistics centre includes a dry warehouse, a climate controlled depot and a container yard, as well as a shopping centre. An office complex and hotel are due to be built in the near future. Kazak company Asia Techno Complect won the contract to design and install the fire safety system. They chose Apollo Fire detectors and sounders, and Kentec panels for the project. The design of the fire safety system for such a large, wide-spread complex had to meet special conditions. The logistics centre was divided into 35 fire zones, and Asia Techno Complect installed 1400 smoke and heat detectors, and 12 panels. Modular interfaces were installed to control alarm signals, suppression systems and building ventilation in the event of a fire. Apollo Addressable Beam detectors were used to protect vast open spaces within the logistics centre. Detectors from the Apollo Discovery range were chosen because Apollo products comply with international standards, are proven to be reliable and are easy to install. Ramtech Electronics’ WES+ wireless fire alarm system has been specified by BG BAU Praxiszentrum as an example of best practice in construction site alarming and evacuating systems. BG Bau, Germany’s statutory accident insurer for the construction industry, has installed WES+ in its Nuremberg training centre principally because it is the only wireless fire alarm system in Europe to fully comply with EN 54. EN 54 fire detection and fire alarm systems sets the standard for design, operation, production, testing and manufacture in Europe. EN 54 is the standard against which fire alarm systems should be measured and to comply, the complete unit – and every unit in the system including the base station, fire call point or smoke and heat detection unit – should have been tested in accordance with the relevant section(s) of EN 54. WES+ features innovative, latest-generation wireless technology that offers construction sites across UK and Europe many unique features. These include a 3+ year battery life, cost-effective (no wiring, so no need for specialist installation and can be re-used on future projects), an unlimited number of units on one site and ability to quickly add and remove units as the build/demolition progresses. The WES+ system has already generated a huge amount of interest at the training centre in Nuremberg, which is visited by 4-5000 inspectors, clients, construction companies and health and safety bodies each year. BG Bau installed WES+ on a 4 storey mock construction site within the training facility to give visitors a practical, hands-on insight into how the system works. It is fully operational and that means visitors can experience the benefits of having a wireless fire alarm and evacuating system on site for themselves. WES+ comprises manual fire alarm call points that are installed so that the system is interlinked, which means that if a visitor activates just one of the call points, all four storeys at the training centre’s construction site receives the same audible and visual alert signal, even if the ‘fire’ is contained to just one of them and a single call point is activated. This completely secure mesh network means that personnel can evacuate immediately. Where heat or smoke detectors are incorporated into the system, it provides automatic cover 24/7, ensuring that the site is protected even when personnel are not present. Being a wireless system makes WES+ easy to install, avoiding the need for specialist trades. It also allows the units to be easily repositioned as the construction schedule progresses – visitors to the Nuremberg training centre can try adding or removing units and then easily configuring them with the base station in seconds. The Base Station itself delivers extensive system reporting and configuration functionality for the fire alarm system across the site. Once an alarm is activated, the base station allows personnel to identify quickly which unit has been triggered. Dieter Terner, spokesperson for BG Bau Praxiszentrum said: “We installed WES+ in our Nuremberg training centre because we were impressed with its technical capabilities and regulatory credentials. The fact that it is very easy to use and re-use means that there really is no reason why a construction site shouldn’t be using an EN54 compliant wireless fire alarm system.” Adam Kovics, Export Sales Manager at Ramtech Electronics, said: “BG Bau leads the market in setting the benchmark for work practices and safety in Germany. WES+ remains the only wireless fire alarm that is fully compliant with EN 54 and our uncompromising approach to quality and regulatory compliance means that it can be used on any construction sites across UK or Europe.”
