The entire fire industry united once again at ExCeL London for the world’s leading fire safety event

FIREX International, organised by UBM EMEA, is pleased to announce another successful year for the leading industry event for fire protection, prevention and detection. Hosted once again at London’s ExCeL from 21-23 June, FIREX International welcomed 16,290 attendees across the three days, which is a positive increase on last year’s show. In addition to the increase in attendees to FIREX International, the show continues to attract the decision makers from across the industry with a 2% increase from integrators, a 61% increase from consultants, and a 23% increase from visitors with a budget over £10 million. The sales and marketing manager for Emirates Fire Fighting Equipment Factory LLC (FIREX) said: “The show is 100% this year. It has got larger, and what is amazing is that not only have we seen a better crowd coming to our stand this year, they are all ready to buy our products.” FIREX International continued to sit alongside IFSEC International in the South Halls at ExCeL London, reflecting the crossover between the two industries, and adding value to both FIREX and IFSEC visitors. The increasing popularity and growth of FIREX was further demonstrated by the increased number of elaborate trade stand designs compared to 2015. Gerry Dunphy, Event Director for IFSEC & FIREX International, said: ‘’FIREX continues to cement its position as Europe’s premier annual fire safety event and this year saw a return to form with over 76 exhibiting companies present. Exhibitors reported substantial levels of interest from international customers as well as a noticeable growth in major end users. Installers told us they’re continuing to see the alignment with IFSEC as a major advantage of attending both shows as the ever increasing synergies between fire and security are coming to the fore. FIREX and IFSEC will continue to embrace this overlap for years to come.’’ FIREX International continued to receive major support from within the industry, the Fire Industry Association (FIA), Fire Protection Association (FPA), Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) and the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) were all present this year as key partners to the show, hosting topical seminar sessions, advice clinics and information zones. This year, we welcomed a new supporting association, the Fire & Security Association (FSA). The Passive Protection Zone offered an extremely useful opportunity for delegates to develop their knowledge of passive fire protection via a variety of seminars and workshops. Plus, due to the location of ASFP member companies around the zone, this offered a one stop shop for all passive fire protection needs. Another big highlight for FIREX this year was from FFE Ltd who worked with the Bloodhound project to ensure fire safety. The Bloodhound project are the team behind the latest attempt to break the land speed record, which will take place next summer. The car itself was showcased on the showfloor and FFE Ltd were on hand to answer the many questions about how they had installed special fire detection technology to keep the driver safe. The Inspirational Speaker Series continued to attract large crowds this year at FIREX International from across the security, safety, fire, facilities management and service management industries to the 400 capacity theatre each day. Our speakers were again of a very high calibre with Colonel Tim Collins OBE on day one, followed by Kate Adie OBE on day two and finishing with James Cracknell OBE on the final day, our speakers shared key insights into how they have overcome adversity and challenges in their extraordinary careers in order to achieve their goals, from everyday tests of getting the kids to school before work to overcoming traumatic events which needed to be overcome first.FIREX also continued to benefit from the co-located health & safety, facilities, security, service management and workwear and uniform events, which as a total saw over 45,000 visitors at the ExCeL over the three days, a 4% increase on 2015. Nine Pierce Enforcer apparatus purchased by South Carolina’s Horry County Fire Rescue

Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, announces the sale of nine Pierce® Enforcer™ apparatus to Horry County Fire Rescue located in Conway, South Carolina. The purchase includes eight Pierce Enforcer pumpers and one Pierce Ascendant™ aerial ladder. The apparatus – purchased through a national cooperative purchasing organisation – will be delivered in 2017. “Horry County Fire Rescue is an excellent department, responsible for one of the largest and most diverse fire protection districts in the southeast, and we’re honored to be selected by them,” said Matt McLeish, Pierce Manufacturing Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. “The Enforcer chassis continues to grow sales and increase market share due to the value and versatility it represents. The chassis is an outstanding choice to meet the needs of this department and the communities it serves.” “With these new Enforcer apparatus, we are well into the process of standardising our fleet, to develop vehicles as similar as possible for our fire-fighters and maintenance personnel,” said Joey Tanner, Fire Chief for Horry County Fire Rescue. “Pierce’s quality and safety technologies are among the reasons we went with them. We obtained the apparatus through FireRescue GPO purchasing cooperative, which enabled us to better evaluate our department’s needs and then determine the manufacturer who can best meet our requirements.” The eight Pierce Enforcer engines each feature seating for five fire-fighters and full height compartments with ladder storage through the body. The upper portion of the vehicles’ passenger side compartments can be converted from standard rescue equipment compartmentation to portable drop tank storage, a versatility that enables urban and rural applications. Each vehicle’s fire-fighting system includes a 1500-GPM single-stage pump, a Husky™ 3 single agent foam system, a 1,000-gallon water tank, and a 22-inch front bumper extension containing 150-feet of 1.75-inch hose. The Ascendant® 107-foot single rear axle aerial ladder is the most popular new aerial apparatus in Pierce’s history. The aerial delivers a full 107-foot vertical reach and a 100-foot horizontal reach with a below grade operation of -10º. Its 100-foot horizontal reach is an astounding 32 feet greater than a typical single rear axle aerial. “We really like the new Ascendant – with its single rear axle, it can manoeuvre into areas where a tandem axle simply can’t go due to size and weight restrictions, and that’s going to be a game changer for our fire-fighters,” added Chief Tanner. “We’re used to having 75-footers in our fleet, and now we’ll have an extra 32 feet of reach for a similar investment. That’s what I call a win-win for everybody.”

Gent by Honeywell introduce new VigInSite tool that separates the old from the new

Gent by Honeywell, the leading manufacturer of innovative life safety solutions, has announced the introduction of VigInSite, a powerful software based tool that can be used to quickly identify the age of the various components of a fire detection system. An industry first, VigInSite helps ensure that safety levels are maximised, while allowing end users to actively schedule and budget for maintenance activities. VigInSite has been developed in direct response to the Fire Industry Association’s (FIA) 2014 Guidance on the Life Expectancy of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems document. It warned that poorly maintained life safety systems that produce regular unwanted alarms can engender a sense of complacency amongst those who they are designed to protect. It also suggested that equipment manufacturers are in the best position to advise on the expected lifetime of the equipment they produce. Gent undertook a comprehensive research programme into the longevity of its products and discovered that the smoke scatter light emitting diodes (LEDs) used in its optical smoke detectors could fall below 70% of their initial light output within 15 years. As this could take a device outside its original calibrated performance parameter and it could therefore potentially become less sensitive. Gent now recommends that these devices should be replaced within 14 years, as part of any planned maintenance schedule. Further component research concluded that Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors should be swapped out within seven years, while other equipment such as control panels, interfaces and other field devices have a realistic lifetime of 20 years. A Gent 24 Approved Systems Integrator can simply plug VigInSite directly into a Vigilon control panel, at which point its advanced software identifies the age of each device. After this process is completed, it formulates an inventory and uses a traffic light system to provide an instant visual guide as to what action should be taken. Green denotes products that are well within their operational lifetimes, amber indicates that replacement is imminent, while red signifies that remedial action should be taken within reasonable timescales. Systems Integrators can send a customer a copy of the document along with a suggested programme of implementation. ‘As a responsible manufacturer, we fully support the FIA’s stance on ensuring that fire detection systems are properly maintained, and that’s why we have developed VigInSite,’ commented Simon Foulkes, Product Manager at Gent. ‘There are many thousands of Gent legacy systems all over the UK and Ireland and some will inevitably contain devices that, due to their age, are no longer fit for purpose. These products can cause higher numbers of unwanted alarms or, more importantly, fail to detect fire in its early stages. VigInSite is already making a valuable contribution to our ongoing efforts to make sure that people, property and assets are adequately protected.’

Hiller partner with Solberg to provide comprehensive foam solution

The Hiller Companies is proud to announce the USCG approval of their Hose Reels to include SOLBERG® ARCTIC™ 3×3% ATC™ foam. While Hiller has partnered with Solberg on other foam options, adding this specific foam fire-fighting station approval offers customers an additional foam solution from Solberg. “We have partnered with Solberg on other foam products,” Marine Products Manager Jorda Elliot said. “We are excited to work with them and strengthen our relationship because they offer a strong fire-fighting foam product portfolio, including environmentally friendly RE-HEALING™ foam.” There are not many foam manufacturers, especially manufacturers of marine foam, so getting this approval is a welcome addition to Hiller’s marine offerings, according to Elliot. In May 2012, ARCTIC AFFF and ATC foam product lines became C6 fluorochemical based, making Solberg the first foam manufacturer in the Americas to offer commercially available foam concentrates that are compliant to the 2015 U.S. EPA PFOA Product Stewardship Program. The Foam Fire Fighting station was designed by Herbert S. Hiller and is a reliable system capable of controlling fires and spills of flammable and combustible liquids. One person can fully operate the device with the necessary speed and effectiveness to deliver foam to the required area in an emergency. This self-contained unit requires only water pressure to operate and is designed for installation in a fixed location such as processing, storage or handling areas. “ARCTIC 3×3% ATC foam concentrate is an extremely effective fire-fighting foam for flame knockdown, fire control, extinguishment and burn-back resistance,” said Mitch Hubert, Vice President Global Product Development. “Control, extinguishing time, and burn-back resistance are paramount to the safety of fire-fighters everywhere. ARCTIC 3×3% ATC foam concentrate has shown excellent performance in each of these categories.” “With a limited number of manufacturers offering marine foam, adding another strong business partner, like Solberg, helps us meet our clients’ needs in a timely and cost effective manner,” Elliot said. “We couldn’t be happier to add Solberg to our team.” The Hiller Companies offers fire protection products and services that are preserving lives and property all around the world. Headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, Hiller extends its reach globally as well as in domestic markets with offices in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. Hiller is proud to safeguard everything from small businesses to nuclear testing facilities, yachts to aircraft carriers, and gas stations to offshore platforms.
