How will Brexit affect the fire industry?

According to a survey conducted by the FIA, less than 12% of businesses within the fire industry say that Britain’s exit from the EU will positively affect business in the coming months and years. The survey, which polled members on their views of the result of the referendum, had 179 responses from businesses across the UK and indicates there is a strong feeling of uncertainty regarding the future of the UK as a whole, and what might happen next for businesses. “The immediate uncertainty appears to have already had the effect of delaying investment decisions. This will, of course, impact on construction and other projects. The long-term future is less clear and would depend upon the exit ‘deal’ reached with the EU,” said one responder.

Charity car wash held to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity and youngster with rare condition

A ‪charity‬ car wash is being held at Eccleston Community Fire Station on the 2 July to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity and an Eccleston youngster battling a rare genetic condition. Firefighters at Eccleston Community Fire Station are holding the car wash at the station, on Millfields, between 10am and 4pm to raise funds for 12-year-old Melissa Adams, who was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome in 2006. The condition means Melissa is unable to speak, has poor mobility skills, suffers epilepsy and needs 24-hour care. Funds raised from the car wash will go towards ‘Melissa’s Smile Fund’ set up by Melissa’s mum Kat and brother Jacob, to provide Melissa with essential equipment she needs as she grows up. This includes a sensory room, which Melissa’s family hope to create as a place of calm for Melissa when she has seizures and when her lack of communications skills prove too much for her. Proceeds will also be donated to The Fire Fighter’s Charity, which provides treatment and support for serving and retired firefighters, and their families, in times of need. Watch Manager Steve McHale said: “Firefighters from Red Watch at Eccleston Community Fire Station have organised a joint charity car wash with Melissa’s family and friends to assist in raising money for two great causes.” “We hope everyone who lives nearby, or who is visiting the area on Saturday, will come along to show their support however they can.” “It will be a great day and hopefully we can help raise funds for two very well-deserving charities.”

Multi-criteria detectors: The future in fire detection?

The introduction of multi-criteria detectors has given purchasers increased flexibility and functionality in their fire detection systems. According to the latest IHS Fire Detection & Suppression Report, the global multi-criteria detectors market was worth $264.8 million (£1.9 million) in 2015. The market is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 6.6% between 2015 to 2020. IHS found that multi-criteria detectors which combine multiple detection technologies have become more common in the fire detectors market for the following three reasons: 1. The increasing number of mixed-use facilities has created demand for detectors that can function in complex environments, while meeting the demand of multiple customers. For example, the increasing number of facilities that combine retail, restaurants and lodging create unique challenges for building owners and fire detector manufacturers. IHS found that the risk of fire varies in each environment – each requiring a different type of detector. Combining multiple technologies into a single unit means that fire detectors will be able to meet the needs of various clients. 2. IHS found that the trend to multi-criteria detectors is mainly caused by customers desire to reduce the number of detection devices installed in their facilities. The fact that fire systems in most instances continue to be a ‘must’ purchase by law, means some end users want to see fewer detectors installed in their facilities. Because of this situation, multi-criteria detectors are more often being specified in projects where aesthetics are a concern. 3. The price of multi-criteria detectors continues to decline, as more systems are installed and competition in the fire detection market increases. IHS found that declining prices are contributing to more rapid adoption of multi-criteria detectors, as some customers that were once priced out of this market have now started to realise the value of this detector type. The increased adoption of multi-criteria detectors is expected to continue, increasing the opportunity for fire detection product manufacturers. Currently, these detectors are viewed as a premium product mostly installed in high-end projects. As the price of multi-criteria detectors becomes more competitive, their use is expected to become more mainstream and manufacturers will find new opportunities to sell these detectors within medium-sized projects.

New CrossClimate tyres keep County Durham Fire Service on track to tackle UK weather

Michelin’s CrossClimate tyres are helping County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service’s rapid response ‘flexi’ officers save lives, after the Service selected the unique summer tyre with winter capabilities for the specialist officers’ cars. The Service is gradually rolling out CrossClimate tyres on 27 Škoda Octavias driven by the ‘flexi’ officers – experienced specialists trained to respond to any emergency situation at a moment’s notice, adding the Michelin fitments’ on-road performance, safety, longevity and durability to a cargo of specialist fire-fighting expertise. Jeff Dickson, Transport Manager at County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, says: “When we heard about Michelin’s CrossClimate tyres we thought them ideal for our requirements, and asked to trial the fitments – trials which quickly revealed the tyres’ on-road performance and traction in all weather conditions. “We quickly took the decision to fit the new tyres to our ‘flexi’ officers’ Škodas, as these specialists must be able to respond instantly to an emergency call, no matter the weather – and get to places other cars may struggle to reach,” adds Jeff. “Also, fitting CrossClimate tyres hasn’t cost the Service one penny more than the winter tyres fitted previously under our tyre policy. By swapping the winter tyres for CrossClimate, we’ve gained the traction of a winter tyre on occasionally snow-covered roads, married to the performance of a summer tyre – we’ve simply acquired the best tyre possible for the job at hand and boosted mobility in unpredictable conditions for this vital part of our fleet as a result,” Jeff says. The fitments offer the benefits of a summer tyre for dry or wet braking, total mileage and energy efficiency, while also boasting the traction and braking performance of a winter tyre on cold and snow-covered roads – making CrossClimate tyres perfect for the UK’s often unpredictable weather. County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service serves an area of approximately 2,460 square kilometres, operating from 15 fire stations across the counties of Darlington, Derwentside, Durham, Easington, Sedgefield and Wear and Tees. The highly-trained ‘flexi’ officers typically carry specialist gear in their Škodas’ boots above and beyond a fire-fighter’s standard protective equipment. Some officers carry personal protective equipment and information packs required to help control various dangerous situations, such as chemical and fuel spills, working at height or flooding incidents. The ‘flexi’ fleet’s new CrossClimates will be fitted exclusively by service provider ATS Euromaster, which also manages the Michelin tyres fitted to the Service’s mainline fire response and support vehicles. “I was so impressed by the CrossClimates during testing that I’ve since purchased a set for my personal vehicle,” adds Jeff. “During a period of poor weather in the winter, my wife said she had sailed past wheel-spinning commuters while out and about. There’s no higher praise than that!” CrossClimate tyres are currently available in 23 dimensions, covering 76 per cent of all car and car-derived van tyres in sizes from 15 to 17 inches, with Michelin expected to launch more sizes throughout 2016, including additional fitments in 15 to 17 inches, plus new tyres in 14, 18 and 19 inches. With a V-shaped tread and self-blocking 3D sipes, CrossClimate tyres are designed to optimise traction in snow. Described as a ‘claw’ effect, the vertical and lateral waves of the sipes give the tread blocks greater rigidity, while also benefiting longevity, steering precision and general dry road performance. CrossClimate tyres have also earned the top ‘A’ rating for wet braking on European tyre labels, and several sizes have achieved a ‘B’ rating for rolling resistance, with a noise rating of 68 decibels.

Trading conditions discussed by local MP and leading workwear manufacturer

A visit to a Stockport-based workwear manufacturer by a local Member of Parliament shone the spotlight on the work being done by the company and the changing nature of the markets it serves. Ballyclare Limited hosted the visit by Ann Coffey MP (pictured left) to its headquarters in Cheadle Heath and took the opportunity to discuss how changes were taking place in the way customers source the industrial, corporate, high visibility and foul weather garments which the company produces. “We invited Ann to visit us so that she could see the work that we do here and the role we play in the local community,” explains Ballyclare’s UK Managing Director, Carlton Greener (pictured right). “Ann hadn’t been to Ballyclare before so we were delighted to introduce her to the business and the products we supply to such areas as the police, ambulance, rail and power industries.” The company also took the opportunity to discuss some of the current issues in these markets with their visitor. “The markets are very competitive and we face some significant changes in the way customers procure our products,” adds Carlton. “We explained to Ann that a number of customers have recently subcontracted much of their clothing procurement activities to third parties and this is beginning to have a significant impact on the way business is transacted.” “It was interesting to hear Ballyclare’s views on how things are changing and how they are adapting to new ways of dealing with their customers,” adds Ann. “However, they are clearly a successful company and I’m sure that they will be able to overcome any challenges they face.” The company has already begun to address changing market conditions by expanding into Europe, with the recent opening of a new office in Germany. “This open up a huge new audience for us, and it will allow us to provide those customers with the same level of high quality products and service that are rapidly becoming recognized as Ballyclare hallmarks,” concludes Carlton.
