Scania and their latest innovations at INTERSCHUTZ

As Scania returns to the first Interschutz held since 2015, it is in some respects making its debut all over again at the fair, the world’s leading trade event for the fire and rescue services, civil protection, safety and security.

For Scania will be showing a range of vehicles and solutions that it’s developed in the intervening years, which are already well proven and appreciated by many fire brigades.

  • Scania is also showing its focus on safety with options such as the rollover side curtain airbags for all four doors on the Scania CrewCab.

“Since the last time Interschutz took place, we have introduced a completely new range of solutions based on our modular system,” says Louise Johansson, Product Manager, Critical Community Services at Scania Trucks. “Scania’s range and our capabilities for responding with solutions for specific customer needs have increased even further. The jewel in the crown is our modular CrewCab in all its variants.”

Scania’s CrewCab is the only vehicle in the industry that can be equipped with the unique – and award-winning – rollover side curtain airbag system. With that introduction, Scania took an important step towards mitigating one of the most critical consequences of rollover accidents, where drivers or passengers are injured or even fatally crushed by their own vehicle. This clever solution deploys and protects people in the cab wearing seatbelts, if the truck happens to roll over.

“We see a growing demand for updated ergonomics, improved safety and solutions that are better adopted for operating in busy, urban environments like big cities,” says Johansson. “Firefighters need trucks that are easy to manoeuvre, which requires the driver to have good visibility and an agile vehicle as his or her work tool.”

Scania’s CrewCab has served as the foundation for thousands of firefighting trucks around the globe. It is available in four different versions (long cab/short cab, normal roof/high roof), and what they all have in common are their quality, attention to detail and the level of safety they offer for the staff, especially on the way to the next assignment.

Scania will showcase a number of trucks at its stand, among them a BEV chassis with an L cab and a Scania City Door. Battery Electric Vehicles are attracting more and more attention for firefighting purposes. An obvious upside is their ability to do the job at the location without creating noise or emissions. And with an L cab and the inward-swinging City Door, it is the perfect tool for operating and manoeuvring in dense, urban environments where good eyesight and easy boarding are appreciated.

The actual chassis has a 6×2*4 axle configuration (the third axle is an electrically steered tag axle), and a wheel base of 4,250 mm. It allows for GTWs of up to 28 tonnes. With nine batteries, it has 300 kWh of installed energy and can offer a range of up to 250 km from the 230 kW electric machine.
