Firestop specialist Protecta has announced an important certification upgrade to its FR Pipe Wrap solution—unlocking greater flexibility for installers working in complex environments and demanding project conditions.
The newly awarded certification enables Protecta FR Pipe Wrap to be either cast in or friction-fitted into rigid wall and floor constructions. In a further improvement, it allows for a gap of up to 10 mm around the pipe wrap itself—this gap can be reliably sealed using Protecta FR Acrylic, a well-established firestopping sealant.
These changes significantly expand the practical application of the system, especially in space-constrained installations. One of the key areas of impact is drainage applications, where standard firestop seals are often too bulky or impractical due to pipe routing and spatial limitations. The new certification provides a slimline solution that still delivers robust, tested fire performance.
Among the headline benefits of the upgraded certification are extended possibilities for use in rigid constructions, a more generous gap tolerance, and a streamlined solution for hard-to-access service penetrations. It’s a targeted update designed to reflect real-world usage and meet the evolving needs of both specifiers and installers.
However, Protecta has also clarified that configurations involving FR Pipe Wrap used in conjunction with Protecta FR Board or EX Mortar are now covered only under the certification for those respective products. Installers are advised to always refer to the most up-to-date installation guidelines to ensure compliance.
Protecta FR Pipe Wrap is specifically engineered to reinstate the fire resistance of walls and floors penetrated by plastic pipes, metal pipes with combustible insulation, or electrical conduits. Its core feature is a graphite-based intumescent layer, which expands rapidly when exposed to fire, sealing the opening left by a melting or softened pipe. The wrap fits snugly around the pipe and is held in place with a self-adhesive tab.
Versatility is a defining trait of the product. It is classified for a wide range of pipe types including PVC-U, PVC-C, PE, MDPE, HDPE, ABS, SAN+PVC and PP. It’s suitable for use in drywall, masonry, and concrete substrates and offers strong acoustic performance in addition to fire protection ratings of up to 240 minutes.
Emission-free and backed by a 25-year working life guarantee, the upgraded Protecta FR Pipe Wrap continues to provide a trusted, adaptable solution for passive fire protection.
