CHUBB FIRE WINS HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARD FROM CERAMICS INDUSTRY

Sunbury-on-Thames) Chubb Fire has been recognised for protecting employees… Sunbury-on-Thames) Chubb Fire has been recognised for protecting employees in potentially hazardous working environments, by scooping the Health and Safety Award for Contractors from the British Ceramic Industry. Chubb is a business of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).   Portmeirion Group, whose brands including Spode and Royal Worcester, nominated Chubb Fire based on its experience on two major refurbishment projects one for its showroom, and the other for its finance and administration office.   Chubb engineers were contracted to carry out the upgrades to meet present day legislation. Their work started with a site survey as Gordon Lomax, Health and Safety Manager, explains: ³Chubb¹s surveyors and engineers worked with extreme caution and made safe working a priority,² he says. ³Much of the project entailed working at height, the short term use of ladders, and working in difficult roof voids. Despite the potential risk, all of their work has been carried out without incident or accident.² Chubb has worked with Portmeirion Group for 12 years, servicing the existing fire and security systems: ³The engineers always show high regard for working safely in all aspects, from installations, servicing and repair and breakdown work,² Gordon adds. ³In all that time there have never been any reported near misses or accidents which is testimony in itself.²   Created in 2007, the Health and Safety Award for Contractors is given to those nominated by members of the British Chamber of Commerce who have made a determined effort to comply with the requirements of the Industry and shown that they possess a real commitment to the cause.   Steve Rogan, Sales Manager Central East, collected the award in October in Stoke on Trent. He says it is a tremendous achievement: ³We have a good many customers and experience in the ceramics industry and this will hopefully propel the image of Chubb as a responsible employer to an even wider audience.²

PIERCE PASSES ISO 9001:2008 SURVEILLANCE AUDIT

ISO 9001:2008 is an internationally recognized standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system ISO 9001:2008 is an internationally recognized standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system. APPLETON, Wis. (October 27, 2010) – Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, today announced that it has successfully completed its ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001:2008 Surveillance Audit by ABS Quality Evaluations (ABS QE), an independent third-party organization. ISO 9001:2008 is an internationally recognized standard that sets forth a set of requirements aimed at achieving customer satisfaction. Pierce completed its surveillance audit and there were no major or minor findings. The company was first certified to ISO 9001 standards in 1998. “The ISO 9001:2008 standard, which is recognized around the world, is extremely comprehensive. This reassures our customers that Pierce Manufacturing maintains consistency in all phases of our operations,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. “We’re extremely pleased to have gone through the surveillance without a single major or minor finding. It speaks volumes about the people and the processes we have in place to build quality vehicles that will perform for firefighters and the communities they serve.” Two types of auditing are required to become registered to the standard: auditing by an external certification body, such as ABS QE, and audits by internal staff trained for this process. The aim of the audit is a continual process of review and assessment, to verify that the system is working as intended. The audit also finds out how the system can improve and to correct or prevent problems identified. The ISO standards require that all employees in the company, especially upper management, embrace quality control in their day-to-day activities. “We have more than 25 internal auditors, throughout the company, who are organized into cross functional teams,” said Chris Bronikowski, Pierce Manufacturing director of quality and continuous improvement. “These are all employee volunteers, who gladly take on this extra responsibility to ensure that we are following procedures and are compliant with ISO 9001:2008 standard.” The International Organization for Standardization was established in 1947 and is an association of 170 members, with each representing their own country. ISO employs a system of technical committees, sub-committees and working groups to develop international standards. www.piercemfg.com
