FIREscape

How FIREscape Nepto Saved the Show at Unity Theatre

Liverpool’s Unity Theatre, a champion of new writing, social justice, and community engagement, boasts a rich history intertwined with the building it calls home. Founded in 1983 by unemployed actors and writers, the company initially resided in a converted warehouse. By 2003, they found their permanent home on Hope Street – a former synagogue built in 1957. This unique space, once a place of worship seating 450, now serves as a vibrant theatre and a living testament to a bygone era of radical theatre. The name “Unity” itself reflects a legacy. It’s a connection to a national movement that significantly impacted British theatre and politics. The story begins in the 1930s with the birth of Merseyside Left Theatre, which later became Merseyside Unity Theatre in 1944. Renowned for their experimental and politically charged productions, this company’s final act was securing the Hope Place building and transforming the former synagogue into the thriving Unity Theatre we now know. Today, Unity Theatre thrives as a registered charity, producing a mix of professional and amateur productions while fostering community engagement through workshops and mentoring schemes. An organisation such as this relies heavily on the generosity of private benefactors and support from arts funding to keep the lights on and the doors open. It also relies on specialist companies to help with some of the more complex upkeep of the building, such as fire safety. Realising that their emergency lighting system was rapidly ageing, Technical Manager Xenia Bayer knew this would be a massive project to undertake, and financially impossible with ever tightening theatre budgets. This was when hope flickered back on. “While exploring options and regulations with the ABTT (Association of British Theatre Technicians), I stumbled upon a brochure by Hochiki detailing their newly launched FIREscape Nepto system. It felt like a dream come true for our theatre. The features were perfect for this environment”. Some of the key features of FIREscape Nepto which appealed to this theatrical mind were: Intelligent and Self-Sufficient: No more tedious lamp replacements or manual system checks. The system runs self-tests, stores reports, and alerts the owners to any maintenance needs. Energy Efficient: The low voltage system promised significant energy savings, a win for both budget and the environment. Adjustable Light Levels: This can be a game-changer for performance spaces. There is regulatory compliance for light levels, but also the ability to achieve complete “blackout” for scene changes and actor entrances/exits. FIREscape Nepto can offer both. “It seemed too good to be true. Reaching out to Hochiki, I hesitantly inquired about sponsorship possibilities, offering site visits for interested parties. Thankfully, after email exchanges and a site visit, Hochiki offered an incredible solution: a complete replacement system”. The team at Hochiki worked closely with the installation company Grainger Fire and Security, experts with over 40 years’ experience in the industry. Hochiki initially reached out to the company’s MD, David Wardman to ask if they would like to get involved in this local charitable project and they jumped at the chance. “We’ve worked with Hochiki products for a number of years, always successfully, so the opportunity to work install this new to the market emergency lighting system as well as help keep this local hub of the community open was something we were keen to get involved in”. Leading on the project Will Taylor comments on the ease of installation. “Hochiki products are famously easy to install, and FIREscape Nepto was no different. The theatre is quite a large space and so we initially scoped 5 to 6 days for the installation plus commission. In the end it only took 4 days, plus a day for commissioning. We were also able to retrofit using a lot of the old cabling to save on waste, and the new system enabled us to fault find any issues with that old cable so we could replace it if needed.” Bayer continues “The communication with both the Grainger team and Hochiki throughout has been brilliant, we were able to work around shows all the while ensuring everyone’s safety. The new system is so much more aesthetically pleasing and saves so much space compared to the previous bulky system. The best outcome is that over the year, based on the old system running costs, we predict we’ll be able to save almost 40 times the energy which equates to just less than £900 in savings a year. In our world that is an incredible amount of money which we will be able to plough back into the theatre and the many projects we run for our local and wider theatrical communities”. Overjoyed and incredibly grateful, the Unity Theatre looks forward to welcoming artists, communities, and audiences under the safe and efficient glow of the FIREscape Nepto system. “This new system won’t just replace our old one – it will transform our day-to-day operations and ensure we can continue to shine a light on the arts for years to come, thanks to Hochiki – the show can go on”. Dauntless Air

Demand for Fire Bosses Surges as Dauntless Air Expands Fleet

Dauntless Air, an aerial firefighting company deeply dedicated to protecting people, land and property from the devastation of wildfires, announced the addition of five aircraft to its industry-leading Fire Boss fleet. The growth comes amid increasing global recognition of the effectiveness of scooper-centric aerial firefighting strategies and the superior performance of the Fire Boss in wildfire operations. In the United States, demand for the Fire Boss – also known as the Single Engine Scooper (SES) – has reached unprecedented levels, with a record number of new Fire Boss solicitations issued this past off-season. Now in the U.S. there are a total of 29 Fire Bosses, which meet the compliance requirements of the Office of Aviation Services (OAS), in operation across 24 exclusive-use (EU) and 10 call-when-needed (CWN) contracts. This is up from 15 EU and 7 CWN Fire Boss contracts from the year before. As the most experienced, longest running, and largest operator of Fire Bosses, Dauntless holds a large majority of these contracts. Many of the new contracts begin earlier in the season than previous years and were issued by states that have never before issued an EU Single Engine Scooper contract. Internationally, fire agencies have ordered dozens of Fire Bosses to secure the future of their country’s aerial firefighting fleet. In just the past 24 months, officials in Greece have ordered a record-setting 31 Fire Bosses, while Turkey and Slovenia have secured manufacturer contracts for 15 and four aircraft, respectively. This global activity has also created additional demand for U.S. aerial firefighting companies with Fire Bosses to operate in Europe. “In the U.S. and globally, fire agencies are acting on what we have long known: the Fire Boss is a game-changer in wildfire suppression,” said Brett L’Esperance, CEO of Dauntless Air. “Growing demand for the Single Engine Scooper is no surprise, especially when it’s compared with the only other fixed-wing scooper available – which is 10 times more expensive to acquire and operate than the Fire Boss. As Fire Boss demand continues to grow, Dauntless is committed to ensuring that our fleet matches the need, and that our ongoing investments in training and technology enable us to remain the safest, most experienced, most reliable Fire Boss operator globally.”  Supporting this new global demand is mounting evidence demonstrating the reliability and effectiveness of the Single Engine Scooper in aerial firefighting operations. The U.S. Forest Service’s 2020 Aerial Firefighting Use and Effectiveness (AFUE) study found that scoopers and helicopters achieved higher percentages of effective drops on wildfires compared to retardant-dropping air tankers. The study also found that during Initial Attack (when a fire is smaller than 100 acres in timber or 300 acres in grass or shrubland), Single Engine Scoopers and Type 2 helicopters are the most effective platform available for delaying fires and reducing their intensity. These findings prove the Single Engine Scooper’s ability to rapidly contain wildfires, helping create less taxing conditions for wildland firefighters on the ground while reducing devastation and mitigating the widespread health impacts of smoke from large wildfires. As far back as 2012, the RAND Corporation recommended a scooper-centric aerial firefighting strategy for the U.S. Now, as climate change exacerbates the frequency and intensity of wildfires, more states and federal agencies are heeding the call for an increased focus on scoopers. “It’s been a long time coming, but it’s clear that Single Engine Scooper-infused rapid initial attack is gaining ground around the world,” added L’Esperance. “By expanding our fleet, we are not only increasing our operational capacity but also reinforcing our commitment to leading the fight against wildfires wherever we’re needed.” To read the full article, see our last issue here. Calgary Fire Department First in Canada to Receive Volterra

Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation business, is pleased to announce the Calgary Fire Department will receive the fourth placement of the Pierce® Volterra™ Electric Pumper in North America. This is the first in Canada and part of Pierce’s ongoing commitment to optimizing and evaluating the Pierce Volterra Platform of Electric Vehicles in various environmental conditions. Other placements include Madison, Wisconsin, Gilbert, Arizona, and Portland, Oregon. The Calgary Fire Department’s winter operations provide an ideal environment for cold weather verification, allowing Pierce to gather valuable data on the vehicle’s performance in extreme low temperatures, much like the ongoing evaluation of performance in arid, subtropical conditions in Gilbert, Arizona. “We look forward to incorporating the Pierce Volterra electric fire truck into our fleet, as it represents a significant advancement in our commitment to sustainable firefighting solutions and reduced emissions,” said Nigel Thorley, Leader, Fleet and Equipment for the Calgary Fire Department. “Pierce and Commercial Emergency Equipment have been trusted partners and their dedication to innovation and reliability ensures that this state-of-the-art vehicle will enhance our ability to serve Calgary’s diverse and growing community. The city’s Green Fleet Strategy aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2030, promoting the use of electric and low-carbon vehicle technologies. Adding the Pierce Volterra Electric Pumper aligns with these goals, supporting Calgary’s mission to be an environmentally sustainable and resilient city. The Pierce Volterra Electric Pumper will be showcased in Commercial Emergency Equipment’s booth during the 2024 Alberta Fire Chiefs Association Tradeshow on May 26-27, 2024, and will be delivered to the Calgary Fire Department soon thereafter. The electric fire apparatus is expected to be in service this summer. Pierce dealer, Commercial Emergency Equipment, will provide service support for the vehicle as it does with all Calgary Fire Department’s Pierce fire apparatus. Commercial Emergency Equipment’s emergency vehicle technicians (EVTs) have undergone Volterra-specific high-voltage system service training at the manufacturer’s headquarters in Appleton, Wisconsin. “We are proud to support Pierce Manufacturing’s first zero-emission emergency apparatus in Canada,” said Carey Feduniw, general manager of Commercial Emergency Equipment. “The Commercial Group of Companies has a long history of vehicle electrification and sustainability, including the outfitting of fully electric work vehicles for the City of Calgary, and this partnership is a testament to our commitment to a greener future. Our certified technicians are ready to ensure the successful integration of this advanced vehicle into the Calgary Fire Department’s fleet.” Several fire departments throughout North America have Pierce Volterra electric fire trucks on order and in production. Fire departments interested in configuring a Pierce Volterra EV to meet their specific needs are encouraged to contact their local Pierce dealer for more information and to begin the customization process. Neptune Aviation Receives USFS Contract for Wildfire Season

Neptune Aviation Services, a leader in aerial firefighting and aviation services, was awarded a Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) by the United States Forest Service (USFS) with task orders for the three BAe 146 aircraft they had available for the 2024 wildfire season. All three task orders are for exclusive use and include a base year with four 1-year options along with 160-day guaranteed Mandatory Availability Periods (MAP). With this award and their existing contracts, Neptune’s entire fleet of nine airtankers are committed to exclusive-use contracts. “All of our BAe 146 aircraft are strategically deployed under contract in key wildfire-prone regions, including California and Colorado, ensuring nationwide coverage and rapid response capabilities,” says Jennifer Draughon, President of Neptune Aviation. “We are proud to support wildland firefighting efforts across the country and we are grateful to everyone at Neptune for helping us to secure this contract. Their commitment to excellence has solidified Neptune as a leader in aerial firefighting.” Neptune’s fleet of BAe 146 airtankers is ideally suited for aerial wildland firefighting. These aircraft offer a combination of slow flight characteristics, high cruising speed, and outstanding maneuverability. Fire Seals Direct

Fire False Alarms Waste 14,575 Days in Last Decade

In the year ending September 2023, Fire & Rescue Services (FRSs) attended 246,529 fire false alarms, the largest year ending September figure since 2011. As experts in passive fire protection, Fire Seals Direct will be focusing on false alarms caused by a fire alarm or fire-fighting equipment (including accidental initiation by persons) in error. What is a ‘false fire alarm’? Firstly, we must define a fire false alarm. According to the Home Office, a fire false alarm is ‘where an FRS attends a location believing there to be a fire incident but, on arrival, discovers that no such incident exists or existed’ Fire false alarms can be broken down into 3 motive-based categories: Good intent: Calls made in good faith in the belief that there is a fire. Malicious intent: Calls made with the intention of getting the FRS to attend a non-existent incident. Due to apparatus: Caused by a fire alarm or fire-fighting equipment (including accidental initiation by persons) in error. As experts in passive fire protection, we will be focusing on this latter category. Here’s a summary of our key findings: Fire false alarms wasted 349,806 hours in England in the last decade. Fire false alarms wasted 14,575 days in England in the last decade. The number of fire false alarms increased by 8.0% compared with 10 years ago. There has been a 20% decrease in malicious fire false alarms from 10 years previously. Faulty apparatus is the largest time waster, with a 14% increase from 10 years previously. Fire response times are getting slower, increasing by 49 seconds compared with 10 years ago. In 2022/23 alone, fire false alarms wasted 37,164 hours (or 1,549 days) Including return journeys, 699,611 hours (or 29,150 days) were wasted by fire false alarms in the past decade. You can find further data and information on our findings on our website. To read the full article, see our last issue here.
