Chosen to help protect major new Italian tunnel development For many years now, the engineering world has sought innovative yet effective solutions to the problems of ensuring safety in road tunnels, and in particular protection against the constant threat of fire. Now, thanks to the use of FireMaster® FireBarrier™ 135 from Morgan Advanced Materials, the users of one key road tunnel in central Italy are thoroughly protected. The Serralunga tunnel runs for 1300m near the mountain town of Rocca di Cambio, in Italy, connecting the popular ski resorts of Campo Felice with the Plateau Rocche via the motorway system. Built at an altitude of 1600m, the Serralunga tunnel has a gradient of 4.5% and was opened to traffic in December 2013. Fire in road tunnels can have catastrophic consequences; not only does it threaten human life, but it can cause huge damage to the tunnel’s structure, in some cases resulting in collapse. Furthermore, fires in tunnels burn at extremely high temperatures; a typical tunnel car fire reaches 400°C, but a large petrol tanker fire may reach 1400°C. Therefore, all tunnels must offer protection sufficient to deal with these events. The Serralunga Tunnel has two escape routes, which take the form of suspended paths. The challenge that faced the design team working on this project was lining those escape paths with a material that could withstand extremely high temperatures, protecting both the tunnel’s structure and the people within from the ravages of fire and the effects of smoke. Having considered all options, they chose to use FireMaster FireBarrier 135 from Morgan Advanced Materials, supplied through specialist installer Kapyfract AG. FireMaster FireBarrier 135 is one of the most extensively fire-tested products available for this purpose, and can be applied either in the form of pre-cast sheets, or by spraying to a substrate attached to the tunnel. In the Serralunga tunnel, the product has been applied over a galvanised wire mesh, allowing it to reach every part of the tunnel surface. FireBarrier 135 has very high adhesion capacity, so very little of the material is lost during application. FireBarrier 135 goes on in a single application – a mere 36mm thickness was ideal for the Serralunga work – and dries quickly, a particular advantage in the Serralunga project, since all parties wanted to see the tunnel open promptly. Ermanno Magni, Technical Product Application Manager, Europe, for Morgan , is pleased with the results of the Serralunga Tunnel project. "This is only the second tunnel in Italy to use this cutting-edge technical solution, and Morgan is delighted to be leading the way in this field. The installation of FireBarrier 135 in this project was swift and straightforward and it has given a smooth and uniform finish to the tunnel escape routes. Most importantly, we know from extensive testing that the use of this product helps to ensure the safety of people using the Serralunga Tunnel, even in extreme fire conditions." Francesco Ferrari, specialist fire protection consultant, has also been impressed by the Serralunga project. "The treatment of the suspended escape galleries in this tunnel with FireBarrier 135 provides an extremely significant layer of protection for users of this tunnel. Its use is backed by a wealth of evidence, and installation of approximately 6,500 square feet (600m²) of protection has been achieved in under 40 days," he commented. FireBarrier 135 is produced by Morgan’s Thermal Ceramics business. For further information, please visit http://www.firemaster.morganthermalceramics.com/cementitious

A historic school is protected with Apollo equipment Apollo fire detection technology has been chosen to protect a historic school in Canterbury, Kent, which counts playwright Christopher Marlowe, astronaut Michael Foale and actor Orlando Bloom among its former pupils. The King’s School is a co-educational independent school for both day and boarding pupils and sits in the grounds of the prestigious Canterbury Cathedral. There are currently 821 pupils on The King’s School register, 75% of which are boarders. There are six boys’ boarding houses, six girls’ boarding houses and three day houses. The tradition of education in Canterbury goes back to 597AD, when St Augustine arrived to evangelize England. The education provided by the monastic foundation, and by the ancient school of the City of Canterbury, was in 1541 made the responsibility of the new Cathedral Foundation of Henry VIII. He established within it 50 King’s Scholars as well as a Headmaster and Lower Master. Thanks to this core of King’s Scholars, the school came to be known as the King’s School. The school is thought to be the oldest continually-operating school in the world and, as such, protecting property as well as life is of utmost importance to preserving this significant piece of educational history. The Meister Omers building is one of the boys’ houses at The King’s School and is home to 49 pupils. The house, popularly known as MO, was built in the fifteenth century by Cardinal Beaufort and is shrouded in history. Edward IV held a Parliament in the house in 1470, Cardinal Coligny died there in suspicious circumstances in 1568, and the arms of Queen Elizabeth in the hall mark her visit in 1573. To meet an ongoing refurbishment of all of the fire detection systems within the school, more than 150 Apollo XP95 units were recently installed throughout the Meister Omers building by Triangle Integrated Fire Systems. The level 1 system is supported by a Kentec Syncro AS control panel which monitors 16 zones on a single loop. Speaking about the project, Terry Hailes, Operations Director for Triangle Integrated Fire Systems, said: “We’ve now worked on 14 different system installations at The King’s School over the past four years. All of these have been Apollo XP95 and Kentec Syncro systems with the exception of the original Chapel where Apollos Wireless XPander range was used as no drilling was allowed for cabling due to the building’s age. For Triangle, the fact that Apollo offers open protocol systems which are forward and backward compatible is a big attraction to us specifying the products. Additionally, the fact that we’ve worked with Apollo for so many years also means that we know how reliable the systems are and that we’ll always have support from the technical team.” Jez Albin, M & E Manager at The King’s School, concluded: “The safety of pupils at The King’s School is the most important consideration for us, and the Apollo fire detection system provides peace of mind for staff and parents alike. We’ve had no problems with any of the Apollo systems installed by Triangle, and would choose them again in the future.” For more information on the Apollo range of products visit www.apollo-fire.co.uk.

New generation super fibers bring wave of innovations to fiber market Researchers of Teijin Aramid, based in the Netherlands, and Rice University in the USA are awarded with the honorary ‘Paul Schlack Man-Made Fibers Prize’ for corporate-academic partnerships in fiber research. Their new super fibers are now driving innovation in aerospace, healthcare, automotive, and (smart) clothing. The honorary Paul Schlack prize was granted by the European Man-made Fibers Association to Dr. Marcin Otto, Business Development Manager at Teijin Aramid and Prof. Dr. Matteo Pasquali from Rice University Texas, for the development of a new generation super fibers using carbon nanotubes (CNT). The new super fibers combine high thermal and electrical conductivity, as seen in metals, with the flexibility, robust handling and strength of textile fibers. “The introduction of carbon nanotube fibers marked the beginning of a series of innovations in various industries”, says Marcin Otto, Business Development Manager at Teijin Aramid. “For example, CNT fibers can be lifesaving for heart patients: one string of CNT fiber in the cardiac muscle suffices to transmit vital electrical pulses to the heart. Or by replacing copper in data cables and light power cables by CNT fibers it’s possible to make satellites, aircraft and high end cars lighter and more robust at the same time.” Since 1971, the Paul Schlack foundation annually grants one monetary prize to an individual young researcher for outstanding research in the field of fiber research, and an honorary prize to the leader(s) of excellent academic and corporate research partnerships to promote research at universities and research institutes. For several years, leading researchers at Rice University and Teijin Aramid worked together on the development of CNT production. Teijin Aramid and Rice University published their research findings on carbon nanotubes fibers in the leading scientific journal, Science, beginning of 2013.
