New Orleans Fire Department Expands Fleet

Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation business, has announced the delivery of four Ascendant 107′ Heavy-Duty Aerial Ladders on Enforcer chassis to the New Orleans Fire Department. These four identical trucks, built on a single rear axle chassis, were selected for their exceptional manoeuvrability on the city’s historic, narrow streets. The addition of these trucks further strengthens the long-standing partnership between the New Orleans Fire Department, Pierce, and Pierce dealer Siddons-Martin Emergency Group. The New Orleans Fire Department has a rich history with Pierce Manufacturing, having purchased 21 Pierce pumpers in 2018. The department also added three additional Pierce aerial trucks to their fleet, creating a fully Pierce-equipped frontline firefighting operation. This latest delivery is another significant investment in enhancing the department’s firefighting capabilities. The new aerials are designed to meet the specific demands of New Orleans’ urban landscape. Charlie Howley, fleet manager for the New Orleans Fire Department, commented, “We fell in love with the first Pierce Ascendant aerial we added to our fleet, so it made sense to expand with four more. These trucks are perfect for manoeuvring around curbs and navigating the tight, brick streets of New Orleans. With Pierce’s TAK-4 Independent Suspension, they handle the rough conditions in our older city very well. Our team appreciates their reliability and ease of maintenance.” The four Ascendant aerial ladders are equipped with advanced technology and performance features. These include a 107′ steel ladder with a 100′ horizontal reach, a 500-gallon water tank, and the robust TAK-4 Independent Suspension system. Additional features include a Waterous 1500 GPM pump, Telma retarder for advanced braking, Rosco Drive Cam system for enhanced incident logging and safety, and a tip control system for operating the aerial from the ladder tip. Kirk Givler, vice president of sales for Siddons-Martin Emergency Group, remarked, “These trucks were designed with practicality and durability in mind, which is crucial for navigating New Orleans’ challenging streets. The customisation and attention to detail reflect our commitment to delivering the best possible equipment for the department’s needs, and we look forward to providing the highest level of service throughout the lifespan of the apparatus.” The New Orleans Fire Department maintains a prestigious “Class 1” rating, serving the greater New Orleans area, which spans 199,000 square miles and is home to approximately 391,000 residents. Operating out of 31 stations across six fire districts, the department responds to around 65,000 calls annually. The department is uniquely equipped to handle the city’s historic architecture and vibrant culture, including large-scale events such as Mardi Gras and the Louisiana Jazz & Heritage Festival, as well as numerous conventions and special events throughout the year. “We’re thrilled with the results we’ve seen from Pierce,” added Howley. “Our aging fleet needed an update, and the new apparatus have exceeded our expectations. They’ve held up well in the humid climate and handle the city’s unique challenges with ease.” In addition to this latest delivery, the New Orleans Fire Department has recently placed an order for a Pierce Snozzle and a rescue truck, further expanding its emergency service capabilities.   To read the full article, see our last issue here. Introducing new pager system compatible with Alertex Lockdown and Fire ranges

Luminite have announced that, following feedback from a school for the hearing impaired that wanted to use our lockdown devices, they have now introduced a pager system to the Alertex range. Within the education sector, lockdown alerts present a unique challenge for the audibly impaired. Due to the transmission range of Alertex devices, one of the main advantages for schools is that they do not have to site an alert in every classroom. However, this means that anyone with a hearing impairment may not be alerted to a lockdown event. Connecting a pager transmitter to a master unit, normally kept in the school’s reception area, facilitates the use of vibrating pagers within classrooms or elsewhere to act as an additional alert for pupils or teaching staff with a hearing impairment. No power supply is required as the system is battery powered. Connect the transmitter to a Bridge (NXIPBRIDGE) so that it can be used to send additional real time messages to key personnel. The Alertex range is also widely used as an alert to fire and first aid within the construction industry. When the FIRE button is pressed all Alertex devices in range are triggered. However, FIRST AID does not require a site wide alert, generally the site supervisor only receives such alerts. However, if the supervisor is moving around the site, the pager will display the first aid request and the unit where the request originated from so that the appropriate action can be taken.   To read the full article, see our last issue here. The First UL Listed Type II & Type III AR-SFFF 1%-3% Foam Concentrate

National Foam proudly announces the launch of UniversalF3 Green 1%-3% AR-SFFF (Alcohol-Resistant Synthetic Fluorine-Free Foam) Concentrate, a breakthrough firefighting foam designed to tackle fuel-in-depth tank and spill fires. This innovation is the first AR-SFFF concentrate to receive UL and ULC 162 listings for both Type II and Type III applications at a 1% solution on hydrocarbon fuel fires and a 3% solution on polar fuel fires. Notably, UniversalF3 Green 1%-3% AR-SFFF has earned top-tier ratings from LASTFIRE for all nozzle configurations when used at a 1% foam solution in both fresh and saltwater environments. As a fluorine free foam, UniversalF3 Green 1%-3% AR-SFFF concentrate provides a substantial alternative to legacy Alcohol-Resistant Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AR-AFFF). It is suitable for use with fresh, brackish, or sea water and is designed for mobile emergency firefighting response where Class B hydrocarbon and polar solvent fuels are stored, processed, or transported. UniversalF3 Green 1%-3% AR-SFFF, manufactured in Angier, North Carolina, protects operations at oil, gas, chemical, industrial and aviation fuel facilities worldwide. “We’re excited to introduce this game-changing firefighting foam,” said Bobby Nelson, General Manager at National Foam. “UniversalF3 Green 1%-3% AR-SFFF is the first fluorine free foam proportioned at 1% to meet UL and ULC 162 standards for both forceful (Type III) and gentle (Type II) application. When fighting large hydrocarbon tank fires, using a 1% solution cuts the required foam volume by two-thirds compared to standard 3%-3% AR-SFFF concentrates, delivering a significant logistical advantage in emergency response.”   To read the full article, see our last issue here. Dräger renews sponsorship for National Breathing Apparatus Challenge

Dräger, an international leader in medical and safety technology, has renewed its sponsorship of the National Breathing Apparatus Challenge (NBAC), as part of its commitment to supporting the firefighting community and promoting industry best practice. Now in its 16th year, The Challenge sees teams of five firefighters from across the UK competing where success depends on the expert use of breathing apparatus to manage an incident and the deployment of intelligent strategies such as tactical ventilation. The competition, judged by over 30 highly-experienced national assessors, is split into four areas designed to cover the full spectrum of how breathing apparatus is used across all firefighting roles: command and control; breathing apparatus procedures; fire ground procedures; and entry control. The event is held at the Fire Service College each year using three of their carbonaceous training venues where challenges replicate a wide range of real-life fire incident scenarios, including domestic, high-rise, and industrial. The competition takes place over a weekend and concludes with a Silver Service awards dinner. Dräger’s sponsorship helps to cover the costs of venue hire, accommodation, materials and the awards dinner, so as to keep competition entry costs as low as possible. Mark Andrews from NBAC says there has been an increased need for realistic training over recent years: “We now have fewer fire emergency callouts, which is undoubtedly a success story for the industry. But it means realistic training is more important than ever to ensure fire crews can respond quickly, dynamically and instinctively when emergencies happen,” he says. “The national challenge provides an excellent opportunity to provide firefighters with realistic training in breathing apparatus use to further that goal, while also being an event to bring the industry together and celebrate achievements. We are thrilled Dräger continues to sponsor such an important event.” Liz Millward, Marketing Manager for Emergency and rescue Services, Dräger, says the NBAC demonstrates what physically demanding and complex roles our firefighters undertake: “The competition takes a firefighter from site investigation, entry control board use and communication through to quickly and efficiently accessing water supply and unloading ladders and PPE equipment. It showcases how breathing apparatus is not just used to provide respiratory protection to wearers, but also to inform strategies, monitor firefighters’ health and connect the whole team,” she says. “We have been a sponsor from the start of NBAC and are delighted to continue our sponsorship in support of the firefighting community.” The 2024 NBAC event took place on October 12th.   To read the full article, see our last issue here. Santa Rosa Fire Department acquires new Pierce Ascendant Tiller

The Santa Rosa Fire Department in California has enhanced its firefighting capabilities with the acquisition of a custom-built Pierce Ascendant 107’ Heavy-Duty Tiller Aerial Ladder. Manufactured by Pierce Manufacturing Inc., a division of Oshkosh Corporation, this state-of-the-art apparatus will support the department’s work in high-density urban areas and rapidly developing zones in downtown Santa Rosa, furthering its mission to protect a population nearing 200,000. The department’s latest addition, acquired through Pierce dealer Golden State Fire Apparatus, represents an ongoing collaboration that began in 2016. Since then, Santa Rosa has added three tillers and other Pierce apparatus to its fleet, with seven additional units currently on order. According to Fire Captain Gunnar Dean, the department’s satisfaction with Pierce’s quality and performance underpins this longstanding partnership. He highlighted the Ascendant Tiller’s superior reach and maneuverability, which is essential in Santa Rosa’s densely built downtown, an area marked by significant growth and development. Operating across ten stations, the Santa Rosa Fire Department also offers mutual aid to surrounding areas, covering an extensive region. As part of a broader fleet modernisation effort, the Ascendant Tiller will enable the department to better respond to the growing volume and complexity of emergency calls, which exceeded 34,000 in 2023 and are anticipated to surpass 35,000 this year. The new tiller will be stationed at Fire Station 1, the busiest in the region, and is equipped with advanced features tailored for urban firefighting. Its 107’ ladder reach allows crews to access high-rise structures and navigate narrow streets in downtown Santa Rosa with precision. The tiller’s design incorporates specialised compartments for equipment essential to auto extrication, low-angle rescues, and hazardous materials responses. The vehicle also features the Pierce Command Zone electronics system, allowing real-time performance monitoring and diagnostics to support operational efficiency. Captain Dean praised the Santa Rosa City Fleet Services department and City Council for their role in approving the funding needed for this acquisition. As the community expands, the department is also planning to add new stations and units to ensure responsive and robust fire protection across the area. The addition of the Ascendant Tiller marks a crucial step in addressing the city’s unique fire protection needs. Golden State Fire Apparatus President and Owner, Ryan Wright, expressed pride in the strong relationship with the Santa Rosa Fire Department, underscoring the commitment to quality and ongoing support for the department’s evolving requirements. This latest addition is a reflection of Santa Rosa’s proactive approach to public safety and its dedication to maintaining a resilient and capable emergency response fleet.   To read the full article, see our last issue here.
