Four people confirmed dead following explosion in Leicester, UK
Police have confirmed that four people died in an explosion at a shop in Leicester, which happened on the 25th February.
At around 19:00, Leicestershire Police declared a “major incident” following the blast, which took place on Hinckley Road.
The police force also said that four other people were sent to hospital, one of which with serious injuries.
However, Supt Shane O’Neill said that the police force believe that there could be more people who are unaccounted for, while rescue efforts would continue.
The cause of the blaze is as of yet unknown, but at this current state, the explosion isn’t being linked to terrorism.
The building in question had a shop on the ground floor and a two-storey flat directly above it.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live, a senior firefighter revealed that four bodies had been found inside the building, while crew members were working tirelessly to search for any possible survivors.
Supt O’Neill said: “It is a dangerous scene so trained officers from the fire service and police took over as soon as possible.
“I can’t say at this stage [what may have caused it] but it is a joint investigation between the fire service and the police and the priority is to make the area safe. It is still a search and rescue operation. It is important we try and find as many people as possible.”
