Pierce delivers four apparatus to Mt. Juliet, Tennessee

Brand new department serves fast-growing community Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation company, has delivered four apparatus to Tennessee’s Mt. Juliet Fire Department. The vehicles include a Pierce® Velocity™ 100-foot aerial platform, a Pierce Velocity 105-foot heavy-duty aerial ladder, and two identical Pierce Impel™ pumpers. The fleet of vehicles was acquired through a government tax-exempt program with a 10-year lease-to-purchase option. “The performance of our new Pierce vehicles is excellent: they’re easy to operate, and our firefighters appreciate the overall build quality and safety technologies, such as the side roll protection system and TAK-4® independent front suspension,” said Fire Chief Erron Kinney of the Mt. Juliet Fire Department. “We visited the Pierce plant during construction, and I was impressed by the commitment to excellence you feel from every person working at Pierce. I left reassured about the investment our community has made.” “After previously being protected by a neighboring community’s fire department, the Mt. Juliet Fire Department was recently formed, and Pierce is honored to be selected as its apparatus brand of choice,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. “These Pierce custom vehicles are an excellent showcase of the leading edge technology and rugged reliability we’re known for.” The 105-foot heavy-duty ladder is built on a Velocity chassis and features TAK-4 independent front suspension, the Pierce-exclusive Detroit Diesel DD13 engine with 500 hp, Command Zone™ advanced electronics, and seating for six firefighters. The apparatus also features a 2,000 GPM single stage pump, a 500-gallon water tank, a Husky™ 3 single agent foam system, and a full complement of ground ladders. The 100-foot Pierce aerial platform is also built on a Velocity chassis equipped with TAK-4 independent front suspension, the Pierce-exclusive Detroit Diesel DD13 engine with 500 hp, and a raised roof cab (notched for the aerial device). The aluminum body offers a 300-gallon water tank, a 2,000 GPM single stage pump, a full height and full depth compartment on the driver’s side, full height compartments on both sides, and a wide array of adjustable shelves and slide-out trays to carry emergency equipment. The pair of Pierce Ultimate Configuration (PUC™) pumpers are built on the Impel chassis, each featuring a Cummins ISL9 450 hp engine, TAK-4 independent front suspension, a raised roof cab, seating for six firefighters, and Pierce’s side roll protection system. One pumper features a 750-gallon water tank while the second carries a 1,000-gallon water tank. Both feature the PUC pump and a Husky 3 foam system with 20-gallon foam cell. Pierce dealer, Emergency Vehicle Specialists (EVS), Memphis, Tenn., provides local service and support. “EVS and their team have been awesome, and they’ve done phenomenal work for us,” added Chief Kinney. “They have been very attentive to our needs, and we get first class, top-of-the-line service.” A combination fire department with 12 career personnel and 28 volunteers, the Mt. Juliet Fire Department was formed less than one year ago. To read more about the department and its new apparatus, visit the Situation Solution at Pierce’s website.

Brazil 'no safer' a year after deadly club fire

The fire killed over 240 people Never again, officials vowed a year ago, would Brazil see a horror like the nightclub fire that killed 242 young men and women, all suffocated by toxic smoke that filled a windowless bunker of a building with no emergency exits. Yet as Brazil marks the anniversary Monday of the deadly blaze at the Kiss nightclub, almost nothing concrete has been done at any level of government to improve fire safety. That’s stoking fears that another tragedy awaits, especially as tourists and locals pack clubs during the World Cup football tournament starting across the country in June. "What killed those kids at that nightclub was our culture, a culture of not liking to obey laws," said Luciano Favero, a fire prevention specialist based in Rio Grande do Sul state, where the Kiss fire occurred. "Brazil is a country that reacts; it does not prevent." It was about 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2013, when soundproofing foam on the ceiling caught fire in the overcrowded nightclub in the university town of Santa Maria. The lead singer of a country band onstage had lit a flare as part of a pyrotechnics show, sparking the blaze. Investigators said the burning foam released cyanide, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide that quickly killed. Dozens of bodies were piled in twisted knots inside the club as hundreds stampeded through darkness, trying to reach a single row of four doors that served as both entry and exit. Aside from the dead, 630 people were injured, and about 90 of them still face grave health problems from smoke inhalation. A day after the fire, President Dilma Rousseff presided over a previously scheduled meeting of new mayors from across Brazil, where she told them about the "indescribable pain" she witnessed upon visiting with victims’ families just hours after the blaze. "I speak of that pain to remind all of us with executive powers of the responsibilities we have toward our population," Rousseff said. "In the face of this tragedy, we have the duty to make the commitment, to ensure that this will never happen again." Those promises came to nothing, said Rodrigo Tavares, a private engineer and fire-safety consultant in Brazil. "At first, we had this national uproar and many plans to make changes," Tavares said. "However, in practical terms, the situation of security and fire protection remains the same." What Tavares and other experts agree is the single most important step needed is the passage of a national fire safety code to impose and enforce the same standards across Brazil. The Santa Maria blaze exposed deep flaws in Brazil’s system, which gives states and even individual cities in some cases the right to determine their own fire codes and how to enforce them. That leaves most of the country at the mercy of poorly trained and overtaxed inspectors working in a system with widespread corruption, where a payment is an easy way around inspections and where widely varying safety demands exist mostly on paper. Congressman Paulo Pimenta, a member of the governing Workers Party who is from Santa Maria, has tried unsuccessfully to push a national fire safety code through Congress during the past year. He says a bill hasn’t passed because leaders quickly forgot about the tragedy and turned to other matters as the sting of the tragedy faded. Pimenta’s bill would force buildings to install more emergency exits, which are rarely used in many parts of Brazil, and ensure that materials like the soundproofing in the Kiss club are approved by government regulators. His bill would also make it easier to hold local officials accountable for approving inadequate fire plans for clubs, hotels and other establishments. Both the Santa Maria mayor’s office and fire department say they’ve stepped up inspections in the city, but say they’re waiting on the state or legislature or national congress to put into action any stiffer safety demands. In relation to the Kiss blaze, the club’s two owners and two band members face homicide charges, but are free pending trial. A guilty verdict could bring a prison sentence of up to 30 years, although the complexity of Brazil’s legal system and the ability to present numerous appeals generally means several years can elapse before someone convicted of a crime is put behind bars. State prosecutors say four other people face lesser charges related to false testimony and fraud in documents related to the fire. Five firefighters face trial in military court on negligence charges, while three are accused of falsifying public documents related to the case. Many in Santa Maria fear nobody will be held accountable. "Justice hasn’t been done, and until it is this culture of impunity will win out. Nobody will have learned any lessons because nobody will be punished," said Douglas Medeiros, a university student whose 18-year-old girlfriend, Thanise Correa Garcia, died in the fire. "Here in Santa Maria, there have been no changes to the law, nothing that would force officials to feel compelled to really take action."

The Royal London Hospital is in safe hands with Apollo

Apollo Fire Detectors’ Discovery range of fire products were chosen Apollo Fire Detectors’ Discovery® range of fire products were chosen by fire alarm specialist Static Systems Group and leading construction and development company, Skanska, to provide life and property protection at the new premises of The Royal London Hospital. The Royal London Hospital has been at its current location on the south side of Whitechapel Road, Whitechapel, since 1757. Part of Barts Health NHS Trust, the hospital provides district general hospital services for the City and Tower Hamlets and specialist tertiary care services for patients from across London and further afield. Phase 1 construction work at The Royal London Hospital, part of the £1.1billion redevelopment which also includes St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City of London, took place over five years and opened in January 2012. The Royal London Hospital is now the largest standalone acute hospital building in Europe. It encompasses London’s leading trauma and emergency care centre, one of Europe’s largest renal services and the capital’s second largest paediatric service. The hospital’s new premises consist of three interconnecting tower blocks – two of 17 storeys and one 10 storeys. At the top of one of the 17 storey blocks is a purpose built roof area for the hospital’s helipad. It is from here that the helicopter emergency medical service, HEMS – London’s only helicopter ambulance service – operates. The hospital’s new building incorporates Maternity, Renal and Outpatient departments (Imaging, Therapy, Cardiac, Lung Function, Day Surgeries, etc.), Accident & Emergency and CSD (Central Sterilising Department). There are also 746 beds arranged over approximately 26 wards and 26 operating theatres. At peak times there are approximately 7,000 occupants within the hospital’s building and grounds, including patients, staff and visitors. Skanska are appointed as the main contractor on this PFI project on behalf of Capital Hospitals Ltd and Barts Health NHS Trust. Skanska selected alarm and systems communications provider, Static Systems Group, to design, supply, and install the highly complex fire system for the new hospital. Static Systems, who already had vast experience of working with Apollo Fire Detectors and its industry-leading fire detection solutions, recommended Apollo as the best solutions provider for the project. Prior to making their decision, a team from Skanska visited Apollo’s headquarters in Havant, Hampshire, to interview Apollo’s technical specialists about the company’s products and services. Malcolm Snarey, senior project manager at Skanska, explains: “We took the opportunity to really find out whether Apollo’s products would meet the stringent requirements demanded in complex healthcare environments. Apollo showed us around their test facilities and explained the rigorous testing procedures and standards they adhere to, which gave us reassurance that they would be an ideal partner for this project. It was also important for Skanska to find an open protocol solution to safeguard against any potential issues in the future”. “We had to demonstrate to our client that the system we put in place would meet British Standards (BS5839-1:2002), as well as the requirements set by the Hospital Technical Memorandum 82 (HTM 82) and those of the Local District Surveyor (Section 20, Building Regulations). The solution offered by Static Systems and Apollo was able to meet all of these requirements.” In total, more than 10,000 Discovery units are installed throughout The Royal London Hospital’s new building, including c. 5,000 Multisensor Detectors, c. 150 Heat Detectors and c. 1,500 Manual Call Points. The fire system consists of 37 main fire alarm panels with over 180 loops, 17 repeater panels and two Master Inter-ringing Units (MIUs). These are monitored and managed by 2 Central Indicating Equipment PC’s, one in the Fire Command Centre for occupation and use by attending Fire Officers and one in the 24/7 Building Management Office. The system, which monitors more than 500 zones, also includes c. 3,500 input and output units. These units interface with automatic fire dampers, access controlled doors, sprinkler flow and anti tamper valves, lifts, Motor Control Centres (MCCs), and initiates, via Fire-fighter’s control switches, smoke extract and purge fans. As required by the HTM’s, in the case of a fire, the building is evacuated on a phased basis. Malcolm concludes: “This was a major construction project for Skanska, demolishing 19 existing buildings to make room for the new hospital. It was essential for us to choose partners that would provide us world-class, future-proofed fire detection solutions. Static Systems and Apollo did just this. Their true partnership approach was evident time and time again throughout the planning and construction process, as well as post-installation. Both companies consistently demonstrated their commitment to ensuring that the system we put in place met both our own and our client’s stringent requirements.”

Stat-X® fire suppression system saves screw machine

Fireaway Inc. is pleased to announce another success story Testimony by Roberts Automatic Products, Inc:  "About eight months ago, they had a fire in a Davenport screw machine without a fire suppression system and the machine burned to the ground. The fire and equipment were too hot to manage and the plant was evacuated. We ended up with one inch of water on the floor throughout the plant. "After this experience and a little influence from our insurance company, the decision was made to add a Stat-X® condensed aerosol fire protection system to our replacement Davenport lathe. The Davenport lathe is a multi-spindle screw machine. The machine was protected with a detection panel and two Stat-X 250E generators. During a manned shift a tool broke and started a fire while the machine was making a stainless steel part, with oil as the coolant. Once the fire started, the Stat-X fire suppression system was automatically activated, and the lathe was shutdown. An employee noticed the event and by the time they crossed the aisle to the machine everything was done and the fire was extinguished. The only damage to the machine was the internal light bulb cover was slightly melted. The machine was back in production shortly." About Stat-X Fire Suppression Systems Stat-X fixed systems and Stat-X First Responders® are highly-advanced automatic condensed aerosol fire suppression solutions. These unique, robust fire suppression units are UL Listed, eco-friendly (zero ozone depletion, zero atmospheric life, and insignificant global warming potential) and non-toxic, and are saving lives and protecting property for facilities, machinery, vehicles, and industrial sites around the globe. These units are deployed in the toughest conditions worldwide, including surface and underground mines, military vehicles, long haul buses, rolling stock, remote telecom sites, wind turbines, power substations, electrical cabinets, and various marine and off-shore settings. Capable of being manually, thermally or electrically activated by industry-standard control panels, Stat-X provides highly effective, economical fire suppression solutions to customers around the world. www.statx.com

Ansell sheds new light on worker safety

With hands-free visor light system  Ansell, a global leader in protection solutions, announces the launch of the TRELLCHEM® Hands-Free Visor Light System, US patent pending. The system offers Hazmat responders in encapsulating Trellchem suits a built-in hands-free LED lighting solution with a panoramic view with no risk of blinding reflections.   “The Trellchem Hands-Free Visor Light System adds true value for any responder working in demanding and hazardous environments” says Thomas Draskovics, President and General Manager Ansell Specialty Markets. “By adding an integrated lighting solution into our suits we are convinced that we will help create a safer environment for responders working in these sometimes life-threatening operations”.   Access to light and good visibility plays a vital role in creating a safe environment for most kinds of work. Trellchem encapsulating gastight suits are used by a variety of responders in emergency situations where the environment can be both very dangerous and most often very demanding in terms of access to daylight or any other light sources. Typical situations include visibility limited by smoke from the off-gassing of chemicals to the dark, non-lit space of an industrial building where lights are out. The responder must also normally carry a wide range of tools to be able to complete the mission. A solution that offers hands-free operation of a light source therefor contributes both to safety and efficiency for the entire response team.   The Trellchem Hands-Free Visor Light System is a “short throw” illumination system based on a LED panel mounted along the top inside of the visor. It is connected to a standard 9V battery giving the user an expected duration of more than one hour. The wide beam of the LED panel creates a panoramic view in poorly illuminated environments. It helps the responder with better orientation as well as safer and more rapid performance since it frees up both hands. The design of the system eliminates any risk of reflection back into the eyes of the user and mounts easily in both new and existing suits without the need of any special tools. The LED panel is powered by standard batteries to eliminate the need of any recharging management.   The system fulfils EMC requirements and does not interfere with any radio communication devices. Further, it does not influence or interfere with any regulatory certification regarding the Trellchem suit. For decontamination and cleaning purposes, once the battery pack is dismounted, the system will remain unaffected inside the suit when being washed. More information on the Trellchem Hands-Free Visor Light System can be found at http://protective.ansell.com/en/Products/Trellchem/Accessories/.   Trellchem® is a registered trademark owned by Trelleborg AB.
