California’s Aerial Arsenal: Fighting Wildfires from Above

In the face of relentless wildfires, California employs one of the most sophisticated aerial firefighting fleets in the world to combat the destructive flames threatening lives, property, and natural habitats. Coordinated by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), these aircraft play a vital role in the state’s wildfire response. Aerial Tactics: The Backbone of Wildfire Response Cal Fire operates a robust fleet of over 60 aircraft stationed across 14 airfields and 11 helicopter bases. This fleet is structured into three primary components: tactical planes, airtankers, and helicopters. Each serves a specialised function, working in unison with ground crews to combat the fires. Tactical Aircraft North American Rockwell OV-10 Broncos dominate Cal Fire’s tactical fleet, serving as aerial command and control units. These planes fly high above the fire zones, coordinating efforts between air tankers, helicopters, and ground teams. Capable of remaining airborne for hours, OV-10s guide larger aircraft into precise drop zones to maximise efficiency. Airtankers The Grumman S-2T is the workhorse of Cal Fire’s fleet, carrying approximately 4,500 litres of fire retardant. These nimble planes are particularly effective in the initial stages of a fire, rapidly deploying retardant lines to contain the blaze. For larger-scale operations, the fleet is bolstered by C-130 “Hercules” tankers and contracted Large Air Tankers (LATs) like the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and British Aerospace 146. These larger tankers can deliver up to 35,600 litres of retardant, creating wide barriers to halt the fire’s advance. Helicopters Helicopters like the Bell UH-1H “Super Huey” and Sikorsky S70i Black Hawk provide unmatched versatility. Equipped to carry up to 1,200 litres of water in external buckets or internal tanks, they can perform rapid water drops, transport crews and equipment, and even conduct night-time firefighting operations. The Role of Collaboration Aerial firefighting is a coordinated effort, where various aircraft perform distinct roles to maximise their collective impact. Tactical planes often serve as “lead” aircraft, guiding tankers to precise drop zones. Simultaneously, helicopters provide ground crews with essential support, targeting hotspots and assisting with evacuation or rescue missions. In large-scale fires, the integration of Very Large Air Tankers (VLATs) becomes crucial. Aircraft like the now-retired Boeing 747 Supertanker, capable of carrying a staggering 68,000 litres of retardant, exemplified the power of aerial suppression before its 2021 retirement. Innovation and Adaptation One of the standout capabilities in aerial firefighting is the deployment of “Super Scooper” planes, such as the Bombardier CL-415. These planes skim over water sources, refilling their tanks mid-mission and delivering repeated water drops over active fires. This operational agility complements the precision and power of the fixed-wing tankers and helicopters. Meeting Rising Challenges As wildfires grow in frequency and intensity, Cal Fire’s aerial fleet is often supplemented by contracted resources and, in extreme cases, military assistance. This dynamic strategy ensures that fire suppression efforts remain agile and effective, even under the most demanding conditions. Pioneering Firefighting from the Sky California’s approach to aerial firefighting reflects a blend of advanced technology, strategic planning, and swift execution. As evidenced by the ongoing battle against the Palisades Fire, these aircraft are indispensable in steering, containing, and ultimately extinguishing the blazes that threaten communities. For the fire and rescue sector, California’s aerial fleet serves as a model of innovation and resilience, offering valuable insights into the future of wildfire management and aerial suppression tactics.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Drager

Dräger supports Tyne and Wear with state-of-the-art breathing apparatus upgrade

Dräger is providing Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) with 220 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) PSS Airboss® sets supported by Dräger’s FireGround accountability system to protect firefighters from the inhalation of dangerous gases during live incidents and training events. The contract was awarded following a competitive tender process, involving extensive market research, and supplier demonstrations. The SCBA sets form an essential part of TWFRS’ incident response armoury and replace existing breathing apparatus systems that have come to end of their operational life. This new equipment represents a major step forward in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of TWFRS firefighters. The new system will provide the advanced functionality and ergonomics the Service needs to meet the challenges of modern firefighting while also supporting a diverse workforce. Dräger’s PSS® AirBoss Connect SCBA was selected because of its advanced functionality, light weight, and future proofed, ergonomic design. Through shifting the centre of gravity between the user and the set, the weight of the PSS® AirBoss is carried by the legs and pelvis, rather than the shoulders and back. This reduces the risk of strain-related injuries and fatigue when wearing the set operationally, as well as extending the time a firefighter can spend in the field because of reduced physical exertion. PSS® AirBoss is also adjustable to suit the physiological differences of men, women of varied age groups. This is paramount to being safe in operation and more comfortable to wear, as well as meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse workforce. Dräger’s FireGround Accountability system provides emergency teams with the ability to monitor, communicate and report incidents involving active users of SCBA. It provides a real-time view of all firefighters deployed at an incident, linking firefighters to its system, and relaying vital information back to the Entry Control Board. Information is also sent to FireGround’s web portal, where the user-friendly interface can be used for both live remote monitoring and post incident analysis. Councillor Phil Tye, Chair of the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority, says: “By modernising the Fire Service’s SCBA equipment, we are reinforcing our commitment to providing a first-class emergency response, in turn, protecting our communities, and safeguarding the welfare of our firefighters. This investment provides a range of important aspects including prioritising equality, safety, and operational effectiveness, alongside empowering all staff to perform safely and confidently. “The purchase of state-of-the-art breathing apparatus sets is another example of TWFRS and the Fire Authority’s dedication to reinforce firefighter safety, operational excellence, and delivering value for money for our communities.” Peter Heath, Chief Fire Officer for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, says: “We are proud to be continually investing in our workforce and in particular within the area of firefighter safety. The new breathing apparatus sets will ensure inclusivity for all our crews, and the investment reflects our strategic goals of effectiveness, efficiency, and people. The equipment is paramount for life-saving rescues when firefighters need to enter fires or other hazardous environments. As a former firefighter myself it is encouraging to see continual development and improvement of breathing apparatus sets. “Dräger is one of the leaders in its field and can deliver significant benefits to our firefighters including weight reduction that helps to ease firefighter fatigue, enhances flexibility, and supports a diverse range of body types. This will ensure that all our operational personnel can perform effectively during high-pressure incidents.” Matthew Bedford, Managing Director UK & Ireland Commercial at Draeger Safety UK, said: “Dräger is delighted to be working alongside the operational teams at TWFRS. It means firefighters in Tyne and Wear will benefit from the latest technology alongside the proven track record of Dräger’s world-leading breathing protection equipment.” To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Oshkosh Airport Products Delivers Fleet of Four Striker® ARFF Vehicles

Oshkosh Airport Products, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) business, announced the delivery of a fleet of four Striker® Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles to the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC) of Costa Rica. DGAC received three Striker 6×6 ARFF vehicles and one Striker 4×4 ARFF vehicle. These vehicles will strengthen emergency operations at Juan Santamaría Airport, the country’s busiest international gateway, which serves more than 1.7 million tourists each year. For over 20 years, DGAC Costa Rica has maintained a strong partnership with Oshkosh Airport Products.  Their decision to invest in new Striker ARFF vehicles underscores their continued trust in Oshkosh’s innovative technology and proven reliability. “Our trucks have consistently delivered outstanding performance at Costa Rican airports for decades, and in partnership with our regional dealer, we’re honored to continue supporting DGAC with cutting-edge solutions and service support,” said Robert Colon, associate manager of international sales for Oshkosh Airport Products. The challenging terrain and elevated location of Juan Santamaría Airport played a critical role in DGAC’s apparatus decision. The airport frequently contends with uneven roads surrounding the runways, making TAK-4® Independent Suspension a key feature of the new ARFF vehicles. “Our TAK-4 Independent Suspension ensures the smoothest ride and operational reliability in difficult environments, which was critical for DGAC as they look to enhance their emergency response capabilities both on and off the airfield. DGAC’s experience in responding to critical emergencies has underscored the importance of equipping their fleet with top-tier ARFF vehicles that offer enhanced mobility, speed, visibility, and safety features,” Colon added. Magirus

World’s first turntable SmartControl ladder

The time has finally come: Magirus is starting to deliver its new generation of turntable ladders with SmartControl technology. The first vehicle, an M32L-AS SC articulated turntable ladder, was handed over last week by Magirus CEO Thomas Hilse to the professional fire brigade of the city of Offenbach am Main. The intelligent SmartControl (SC) technology sets new standards for ergonomics, efficiency, and safety in firefighting operations. What for a long time seemed to be an ambitious vision of the future is now, after intensive engineering and development, to be used for the first time in the world in the German state of Hesse. What is SmartControl? Magirus SmartControl technology is a newly developed, comprehensive, intelligent control system that intuitively supports emergency and rescue services. With newly designed ergonomic controls and fast menu navigation, SmartControl turntable ladders are easy, comfortable, and intuitive to operate. Advanced assistance functions provide the best possible support for firefighters in targeted and safe operations. The new turntable ladder technology offers a completely new user experience. Where previously the turntable ladder was often controlled with successive simple movements to the targeted position, SmartControl enables combined movements with unprecedented ease—quickly and efficiently directly to where help is needed. “With SmartControl, we are offering our customers a solution that perfectly equips them for today’s challenges and at the same time allows them to react flexibly to future requirements,” says Thomas Hilse, CEO of Magirus. “The ability to move the cage in any direction and the automation of the control system make the work of the firefighters easier, while at the same time increasing precision and safety. This helps not only in challenging situations, but in every operation.” Smart assistance functions for optimal support and maximum safety An outstanding feature of the new generation of turntable ladders is the introduction of SmartFunctions. They assist emergency and rescue personnel to work quickly, accurately, and safely at all times. Magirus CageControl, for example, is one such function. It enables particularly simple, automatic control of the rescue cage and ladder tip in all four directions (forwards/backwards/ up/down). In addition, the FacadeFunction supports automated control of the cage and ladder tip parallel to any facade in the room. The assistant for the articulated arm provides further automatic functions to ensure the articulated arm is always optimally aligned. Automatic levelling of the arm maximises outreach and ensures greater operational flexibility. In addition, the integrated camera system ensures optimum visibility around the vehicle and the basket. Up to four camera views can be displayed simultaneously on the video screen at the main control station – an invaluable advantage in confusing situations. A new era in turntable ladder control The 32-metre articulated ladder with SmartControl technology is equipped with the SingleExtension system and Magirus DirectEntry for direct access in front of the cab. As standard, every SmartControl turntable ladder comes with the specially developed new controls for ergonomic and comfortable operation of the turntable ladder. The Magirus RescuePilot is located on the main control panel. It enables movement congruent control while the operators’ hand can be comfortably placed on it. This is a decisive advantage, especially during longer operations. This is where the ClassicPilot comes in. It enables intuitive, sensitive motion control with just one hand. In addition, the MenuPilot and SwitchPilot make function selection quick and easy. On the jacking control stands, the JackingPilot intuitively supports the operator throughout the entire jacking process. Additional displays on both jacking control panels provide a perfect overview. In addition, the operator’s cabin is equipped with a new SC control unit with a high-resolution, fully networked display. The latest generation of turntable ladders in the heart of the Rhine-Main area With the procurement of the new M32L-AS SC, the Offenbach fire brigade is not only aiming to use the latest technology, but also to make a conceptual change. ‘With a modern vehicle fleet, we ensure that our firefighters are optimally equipped to act quickly, effectively and safely. With the first SmartControl turntable ladder from Magirus, we are naturally taking a big step into the future,’ explains Klaus Grimm, head of the Offenbach fire brigade’s technical department. However, the safety of citizens and emergency services was not the sole focus of the purchase. ‘When every second counts, the perfect interaction between superstructure, chassis and control technology is essential. Together with the city of Offenbach, we have decided not only to purchase the most modern turntable ladder technology, but also to invest in sustainable, future-proof technology,” adds Grimm. With the Magirus SmartControl turntable ladder, the fire brigade in the Rhine-Main metropolitan region will in future rely on a two-axle series chassis with rear axle steering – in this case a Mercedes-Benz Atego 1530 F – instead of the previous three-axle chassis with power-controlled trailing axle. Among other things, this makes the firefighting vehicle even more manoeuvrable. Future-proof and flexibly adaptable The new generation of turntable ladders from Magirus sets a new milestone not only in turntable ladder technology, but also in terms of sustainability. Thanks to the adaptability and expandability of the technology used, functions and displays can be updated, adapted and/or expanded both during initial operation and at a later point in the vehicle’s life cycle. This makes Magirus turntable ladders a long-term sustainable investment with maximum flexibility for fire services worldwide. ‘The ability to continuously update and adapt the system to new requirements ensures the future viability of our aerial ladders and ensures that they meet the constantly evolving needs of fire services,’ says Marc Kuntz, Director Sales & Customer Service at Magirus. The delivery of the first turntable ladder with SmartControl technology to the Offenbach am Main professional fire brigade marks another important milestone in Magirus’ 160-year history. Further deliveries of the new turntable ladder generation are imminent. To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here.
