DorTrak

DorTrak: Inspections done right

Fireco offers a range of products and services to help you comply with fire safety regulations and standards. The latest of which is the DorTrak software  Fire doors are essential components in any building’s fire safety strategy, serving to prevent the spread of smoke and fire and providing occupants time to evacuate safely. However, they can only perform this crucial role if they are correctly installed, maintained, and compliant with current standards. Fire doors must be inspected and maintained regularly by a certified professional, as suggested by the British Woodworking Federation, who recommend biannual inspections to ensure ongoing compliance and reliability.  Fireco offers a comprehensive fire door inspection service that is third-party accredited, ensuring every detail is assessed. This inspection process not only checks every element of the doorset but also provides a digital record of the findings. The thoroughness of Fireco’s inspections, coupled with their commitment to compliance, provides building owners and managers with peace of mind that their fire doors are effective and meet regulatory standards.  What’s Included in a Fireco Fire Door Inspection?  A Fireco fire door inspection involves an in-depth assessment of each specified doorset. Fireco’s qualified engineers or inspection partners, all of whom have third-party accreditations, conduct a complete inspection covering the door’s frame, hinges, closing mechanisms, gaps, and seals to ensure they are in optimal condition. This systematic approach helps identify potential issues that could compromise the door’s performance in a fire event.  Comprehensive Reporting with DorTrak  After the inspection, clients receive a full report, generated using Fireco’s proprietary software, DorTrak. This tool offers a granular view of each inspected doorset, allowing building managers to zoom into details of specific doors or review an overview of all inspected doors at once. The DorTrak report format is intuitive, easy-to-read, and provides clear summaries of compliance levels and any areas requiring action. If a doorset needs repair or replacement, DorTrak facilitates the process by summarising the required work and enabling users to print or export reports to share with contractors or compliance teams.  DorTrak also creates a live, digital record of the inspection, aligning with the Golden Thread principle in fire safety – a continuous record of safety measures within a building. This feature enhances traceability and simplifies compliance with Regulation 38.  What Makes Fireco’s Service Unique?  Fireco’s approach to fire door inspection is distinct in its commitment to digitalisation and user-centric design. With DorTrak, Fireco ensures that critical data, such as door certifications and ratings, are clearly documented. The app organises data into a format that’s comprehensive and practical for building managers, inspectors, and third-party contractors, eliminating the need to interpret overly complex reports.  Fireco developed DorTrak in consultation with industry professionals, resulting in a system that simplifies tracking and managing fire door compliance. The app also allows RFID tagging of doors, creating a precise map of door locations within a building and making compliance tracking easier over time.  Serving Diverse Clients Nationwide  Initially focused on smaller residential projects, Fireco now supports large commercial sites and high-profile residential complexes across the UK, including healthcare and education facilities. Recently, Fireco completed an 80 fire door installation at Lord’s View One, a prominent residential building known for its rigorous safety standards. This installation showcases Fireco’s ability to provide tailored, compliant solutions in high-demand locations. Beth Corrigan

Quick Fire – Beth Corrigan

Beth Corrigan, Senior Fire Engineer at Heathrow Airport takes part in International Fire Buyer’s Quick Fire Questions in the November issue. What does ‘fire safety’ mean to you?  Fire safety for me means making decisions with honesty, integrity, and always striving to do the right thing to keep the people I am there to protect safe.   If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?  I would love to live in New York City, even just for a short time. It is my favourite place in the world to visit, it really is the city that never sleeps, and I love everything it has to offer from the food to live music and theatre.     What is your go-to lazy dinner?  A cheesy beano – the tastiest thing after a long day!   If you could change one thing in the industry, what would it be?  The industry can be very disjointed with different guidance coming from a number of bodies and organisations. I think reducing the confusion that this can bring would provide clarity to people both in and out of the industry.   If you could be transformed into one animal, which one would you choose?  An elephant – then I could use my trunk to put out fires!   What’s the most important trend you see today?  The drive for sustainability and emerging technologies.   Are you in the profession you dreamed of when you were a child?  From a young age I was always interested in how things worked and constantly asking why, and as a teenager I knew I wanted to study engineering. My Dad was regularly talking about safety in our house, so I think I was always destined to become a Fire Engineer!  If you weren’t in the fire industry, what would you be doing?  I’ve always been very interested in the law and the prosecution service so I think I would be doing something in that area.  Cats or dogs?  Dogs!   What’s one thing about you that we wouldn’t know from your CV?  I absolutely love Strictly Come Dancing!    To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Taktis

Kentec says it’s time to take another look at Taktis

Kentec Electronics has introduced a range of new features to its cutting-edge Taktis analogue addressable fire alarm control panel  Packed with innovative new functionality to protect even the most complex buildings, Taktis is now the perfect solution for a wide range of applications including schools, hospitals, multi-site retail and critical national infrastructure, as well as commercial and industrial facilities.  The critical signal paths of a control panel are the lifeline of an entire fire detection system and issues with power supplies, communication modules and control circuits can have catastrophic consequences. To counter any disruption, the highest levels of redundancy have been incorporated into Taktis, which has multiple back-up microprocessors to eliminate the possibility of a single point of failure with the main microprocessor. Even if its touchscreen display fails, Taktis will continue to operate in reduced functionality mode, the loops will continue to operate and, if a detection device is activated, the panel and other panels on the network will be notified of the alarm condition.   Taktis enables large installations to be fully standards compliant. EN 54-2 states that a system fault should not result in the loss of more than 512 detectors and while this is fine for installations with a single control panel with less than 512 connected devices, large installations can have many thousands of fire detection devices with multiple fire alarm control panels. Thanks to Kentec’s research and development, Taktis can now network up to 127 control panels and incorporates a fully redundant signal path using INS to mitigate risk, enhance fault tolerance and ensure that alarms are received across the network and importantly to the Alarm Receiving Centre.  The latest version of Taktis also complies with the highest provisions of BS 7273-4, which applies to electrical control arrangements for actuation of mechanisms that unlock, release or open doors in the event of fire. Adhering to BS 7273-4 is increasingly important, as Annex A is now normative.  There are three categories of actuation outlined in BS 7273-4, with Category A requiring failsafe operation under the most severe fault conditions. Through advanced cause and effects, the latest version of Taktis meets all the requirements of Category A. This means that door release mechanisms will continue to operate in the event of a fire, or during any event that leads to a fault on the critical signal path that could prevent a fire signal activating a release mechanism.  The fire and rescue service in England attended 229,844 incidents in the year ending March 2022 that turned out to be false alarms. They can be particularly disruptive in hotels and similar accommodation-based businesses such as student accommodation and sheltered housing, so Taktis now boasts a ‘hotel mode’ feature.   When Taktis is in this setting and a detection device activates, only the sounder in the room concerned will initially operate, while Taktis notifies where the event has taken place. A predetermined time period gives a competent person an opportunity to investigate and, if the activity causing the detector activation stops within that timeframe, the sounder will return to standby and Taktis will clear. In the case of a false alarm, this stops other alarms initiating a full-scale evacuation.  Alongside industry leading levels of panel & network redundancy, BS 7273-4 Category A compliance and its ability to reduce false alarms, Kentec hasn’t forgotten the importance of ease of use. As such, the Taktis full colour seven-inch colour touchscreen has several additional customisable features particularly useful for smoke control operation and can be programmed in a wide variety of languages. This intuitive interface renders the system easy to use even for those with minimal or no training.  ‘The latest version of Taktis rubberstamps our commitment to providing the most advanced fire alarm control panel technology possible,’ commented Derrick Hall, director of sales and marketing at Kentec Electronics. ‘Taktis has become increasingly popular with members of the Kentec Installation Partner (KIP) Programme because its features make their lives easier and deliver significant benefits for end users. I would therefore encourage other fire detection and alarm installation professionals to take another look at Taktis.’  For further information please visit https://kentec.co.uk/taktis/#connect_section  To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Graeme Leonard

How manufacturer involvement can mitigate labour risks

While the construction industry grapples with attracting and developing talent, clever product design and manufacturer-led training can go a long way towards boosting productivity and quality, says Graeme Leonard, EMEA fire protection division manager at Victaulic. The construction industry’s labour woes continue. In May, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK reported that 21% of businesses with 10 or more employees, including in construction, were experiencing worker shortages. Meanwhile, the Construction Skills Network (CSN) projected a need for an additional 251,000 construction workers in the UK by 2028 to meet anticipated demand. The situation is similarly challenging across the EU. Also, in May this year, the European Employment Services Network (EURES) reported construction as having the fourth highest job vacancy rate in the EU for Q2 2023, with vacancy rates rising faster than any other sector since 2016. The main challenge faced by the construction industry when tendering for projects has always been predicting project timelines and costs. However, the reality of potentially having to deploy less skilled crews is putting even more pressure on budgeting. Is a less experienced crew going to be able to deliver the project on time, or should additional crew members be factored in?  Can the crew ensure a reliable system or will there be a risk having a recall to make corrections due to lack of installation experience? These are critical questions, especially in the fire protection sector, where the proper installation of systems is required to safeguard not only property but also human lives. It’s clear the construction industry needs to do more to attract new people who are willing to invest time in developing their skills. In the short term, however, suppliers such as Victaulic can play an important role in mitigating the effects of labour shortages or inexperience through innovative product design and targeted training programmes. Designing for ease of use and increased productivity Listening to customers to pinpoint the issues they have on site and addressing them with new innovations is just a start. Developing products that are designed to speed up the installation process while making it easier and more reliable is certainly one thing that can help to mitigate the risk of having less skilled labour and provide the contractor with more certainty about the time spent on site. A key innovation we have developed at Victaulic to help overcome installation challenges and avoid potential incorrect installations is our patented Installation-Ready™ technology. These products arrive on site ready to be installed and don’t require disassembly prior to installation. The products spread right across our full range, from couplings and fittings to even some of our sprinklers. The idea behind Installation-ReadyTM products is really quite easy to follow: how can we make the installation process more efficient while reducing the risk of incorrect installation? The design of our Installation-ReadyTM products allows an installer to join pipes by simply pushing the couplings or fittings onto the grooved end of a pipe, fitting, valve or accessory, connecting it to, for instance, a second grooved-end pipe, and then tightening the nuts using standard hand tools or an impact wrench. Installer confidence and reliability are also built into these products. When the bolt pads touch metal-to-metal, a proper, leak-free installation is guaranteed without having to meet a specific torque requirement. While precision and attention to detail are still a must, such as tightening the nuts evenly by alternating sides and making sure the bolt pads touch, the process removes the need for more skill-intensive techniques and helps to speed up the installation process. Incorrect sprinkler installation also entails big risks for contractors because it always involves having to revisit the site and renting scissor lifts again, thus adding additional costs to the project. We try to address this as well with our Installation-ReadyTM sprinklers. This grooved sprinkler with a coupling already attached is designed so it can be installed quicker and more reliably than a threaded sprinkler, while also avoiding the risk of installers suffering repetitive strain. This in turn helps contractors to better control their labour and optimise the number of workers on the ground. Setting a benchmark with manufacturer training Ultimately, we’re trying to provide an ideal scenario for contractors: products that reduce time on the jobsite and save them money by mitigating the problems posed by the shortage of skilled labour. And while we’re very happy for our products to be a solution, I still believe there is more support the industry can provide contractors in the form of training standards, and here Victaulic is keen to play its part too alongside other industry stakeholders. Undoubtedly, real value can be derived from manufacturers taking on a mandatory role in training. The manufacturers are the specialists in their own products and have the ability to disseminate product-relevant knowledge to labourers on the worksite. That is why we are driving the industry towards training programmes, both on the jobsite as well as in our training facilities. During these training sessions, we cover a broad range of topics such as how to properly groove pipe, measure the groove depth, install and service our alarm valves, and install couplings, sprinklers and valves. If we’re talking about ideal scenarios for contractors, I believe the industry should strive to have at least one member of an installation team hold training certification from the manufacturer for the products they’re handling. That way the contractor can rest assured knowing that a specialist with the relevant skills and knowledge is always available on site to help and support other members of the installation team whenever required. Bidding for a construction project will always entail some level of uncertainty, but as a manufacturer looking to support our customers and the industry, we are helping to mitigate risk and to build up a force of knowledgeable people in the field. We are keeping our finger on the market pulse to deliver high quality products that increase efficiency and reduce the chance of incorrect installation while making sure that
