Rapper Stormzy uses BRITs performance to question Theresa May regarding Grenfell
UK grime artist Stormzy questioned Prime Minister Theresa May regarding her actions in relation to the Grenfell Tower disaster during a live performance at the BRIT Awards.
Last June, 71 people died after an electrical fire ignited and subsequently spread, with the flames tragically engulfing the entire building after they reached the exterior cladding.
There has been widespread dissatisfaction at how the government has handled the disaster, with many accusing May of coming across as out of touch with the people, and not being authoritative enough to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
There has also been a huge amount of criticism levelled at the Conservative party for how they’ve dealt with the residents who survived, as five months after, a vast majority were still living in bed and breakfasts.
It was an eventful night for Stormzy, who won two BRITs, taking home Best British Male and Best British Album for his 2017 effort, ‘Gang Signs and Prayer’, before delivering a live performance of his track, ‘Blinded by Your Grace’.
After his performance had finished, the 24-year-old launched into a freestyle rap that tore into May, while demanding to know where the money pledged towards helping the victims was.
“Yo, Theresa May where’s that money for Grenfell?”, Stormzy rapped. “What, you thought we just forgot about Grenfell? You criminals, and you got the cheek to call us savages. You should do some jail time you should pay some damages, we should burn your house down and see if you can manage this.”
The 2017 version of the BRITs were viewed by 5.4 million people, and it’s expected that the 2018 version would have garnered a similar level of viewers.
