New Chimney Safe training DVD aims to educate firefighters and save lives

firefighters, both on and off-duty, are … firefighters, both on and off-duty, are approached by the general public with questions regarding fire safety issues with their fireplace, wood stove, chimney and clothes dryer vent. Surprisingly, firefighters are not trained on the subject of solid fuel and gas combustion appliance emergencies and prevention. Often the answers firefighters provide are not based on formal education, but on myths and misconceptions that can lead to property loss and death. Chimney Safe Productions Inc.™ has produced Firefighter Knowledge™, a two (2)-DVD public education training series for the firefighter. The training in the series is taught by 30-year veteran career firefighter and Certified Chimney Sweep® Dieter Bove. Vice President and 30-year veteran career Firefighter, Dieter Bove says: "I’ve been providing this training as a presentation to fire departments for 25 years. Since fire service personnel deal with fires, it is assumed that firefighters know the answers to the public’s questions on this subject when asked. In my experience as a career firefighter and certified chimney sweep, this isn’t the case. We produced this DVD training series so the information would be easily accessible to all firefighters. This is not chimney sweep school for the firefighter, this is information that should be a part of every firefighter’s basic training." According to the National Fire Protection Association, dryer vent fires have exceeded chimney fires since 2005 and occur most frequently during the month of January. It is not a chimney sweep school for the firefighter, but it is the information that should be a part of every firefighter’s basic training This is relevant and practical information that firefighters need to know… To be better at their jobs and to Accurately communicate and educate the public. The subject of the 2-DVD set covers fireplace types, types of chimney fires and creosote, dryer vent fires, masonry verses prefabricated fireplaces, safe operating guidelines, NFPA codes verses local codes, installation errors that lead to fires, ignition temperature, common myths, carbon monoxide issues, blast furnace effect, combustible materials, wildlife in chimneys and vents, proper maintenance, types of firewood, recommended and dangerous hearth products, fire suppression for the chimney and fireplace emergencies, PPV (positive pressure ventilation) and differences between North American and European chimney systems. The DVDs are 90 minutes in length and can be viewed either on a high-definition TV monitor or a computer screen. There are nineteen chapters in Video 1 and six chapters in Video 2. Each chapter is less than 5 minutes in length and is recapped for easy, user-friendly viewing when the firefighter goes on a call.

PEL Disabled Refuge Call Range Expanded

The highly popular Refuge Call System … The highly popular Refuge Call System available from PEL Services has received a welcome addition to the range in the form of a new single zone version designed specifically for smaller premises, including retail outlets. It is an economical, simple yet highly effective means of helping building occupiers to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act and relevant standards BS9999 and BS5839 part 9. Instead of engaging in significant building restructuring to accommodate safe gradient evacuation slopes between floors for those unable to use stairs, these systems provide two way communication between identified refuge locations and the central station upon the ground floor. Using a PEL Refuge Call System, disabled persons can alert the central station to their predicament by simply lifting the Refuge Call handset or activating the ‘hands free’ unit, which are placed at key points throughout the building. This causes the relevant button on the control panel to light up and the master telephone to ring. When the master telephone is answered, normal two way conversation takes place and appropriate action can be identified and taken. In addition to the new single zone ‘one to one’ system, PEL Refuge Call control panels are available in four standard sizes, serving 16, 32, 48 or 64 remote locations. In fact this modular system can accommodate up to 256 lines without the need for signal boosters on the line. If required, the control panel can be manufactured to allow remote locations to be indicated on a graphic of the building layout to simplify visual identification. Installation is very simple and cost-effective as all PEL Refuge Call Systems can be used with radial wiring and loop wiring in the one system. Exceptionally reliable, the PEL Refuge Call System comes with emergency battery back-up supply and the telephone cable is self-monitoring for faults. It is compliant with the BS5839:part 9 code of practice for emergency voice communication systems. Details on this simple but highly effective system can be found in a dedicated Disabled Refuge section within ‘Sound and Communications’ at www.pel.co.uk

Fire Risk in Europe Conference

Delegates from 18 countries attended a conference hosted by Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service to share ideas and best practice. Delegates from 18 countries attended a conference hosted by Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service to share ideas and best practice. More than 130 people, including chief fire officers, risk and resilience managers and community safety practitioners took part in the Fire Risk in Europe Conference 2010 on 21 and 22 June at The Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park, Newcastle. The conference, a key part of an important European project on fire risk assessment and management (the ANSFR Project), covered topics including: fire safety in the home; arson investigation and prevention; juvenile fire setting; wildfire prevention and education about fire and safety. Brian Hesler, Chief Fire Officer for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Fire services across Europe are facing similar operational challenges and this event was an invaluable forum to share ideas and discuss new as well as tried and tested ways of working. We were delighted to host the event which was a great success." The event was chaired by Senior Broadcast Journalist Gerry Jackson he said “this was a great event to be part of, with over 20 presentations from practitioners and experts from the UK and Europe there were some great ideas on how to prevent and reduce fire and the damage that fire can cause to life, property and the environment locally, nationally and internationally. As a layman, it was very reassuring to know that this level of work is being done behind the scenes – in the sort of detail most of us never get to see.”

Interschutz Leipzig

Endress Elektrogerätebau GmbH is a market… Endress Elektrogerätebau GmbH is a market leading manufacturer of mobile power generators. With production sites in Germany and other European countries Endress has become a leading brand in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for its fire truck power generators built in accordance with DIN14685. Endress products are available in countries worldwide. For this year’s Interschutz in Leipzig the engineering team of Endress have developed some special innovations. The demand from rescue and fire services for Diesel generator sets has increased over the last few years. However, no manufacturer has been able to offer a silent and small-sized Diesel set with compact dimensions for use in fire trucks. Following the company’s philosophy “More power from smaller volumes” Endress engineers have developed a generator set which is unique in its existing form. With 6kvA and minimal dimensions the generator is powered by a HATZ 1B50 engine and comes with the company own Duplex alternator. The set is also equipped with an automatic 1-click fuelling system. The generator can be fuelled either from the truck or an external tank without having to use a 3-way fuel cock. Endress was the first company in the industry to develop and introduce a multifunctional control system – the E-MCS 3.0 – in fire truck gen sets which provides important optical information directly to the operator. This year Endress has also collaborated with other leading companies in the rescue and fire truck industry e.g. Rosenbauer, Iveco Magirus and Schlingmann to develop a common standard for data transmission – FIRECAN. FIRECAN is a uniform data protocol to monitor and control all equipment components of a truck and provide important data to the control centre. FIRECAN is available for all Endress DIN generator sets immediately. Maxdrive – the latest power management module by Endress makes it possible to use an engine’s full power without a loss of performance. This development is unique in its kind and generates up to 1kvA more power from the same engine. All generator sets with a Duplex Plus generator come with Ecotronic- an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional generating sets. Ecotronic offers optimum fuel consumption with automatic idle control, driven by generator load demand. Because the DIN standard is not applicable in all European countries, Endress offers other models for the fire and rescue industry with the same leading technology to ensure highest levels of safety, reliability and quality for rescue situations – made in Germany.

Diplomatic guests in the bright sunshine: International military attachés are impressed by business culture

The basic conditions couldn’t be better In… The basic conditions couldn’t be better: In wonderful summer weather at the end of June, two dozen military attachés came from the capital Berlin to Swabia, to ensure themselves of the potential of the Kärcher Group directly on site. Background: Military attachés do not only represent the armed forces of their countries, they also transmit their impressions of the host country directly to their home countries. Kärcher Futuretech GmbH, which has a lot of experience in dealing with military guests as a long-standing supplier to the Bundeswehr, was particularly pleased to welcome these international guests. As early as 21 years ago, Managing Director Helmut Stelzmüller and the owner of Alfred Kärcher GmbH & Co. KG at that time, Irene Kärcher, had already invited international military attachés and won them over with the Swabian entrepreneurial spirit. The attachés were cordially welcomed by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alfred Kärcher GmbH & Co. KG, Hartmut Jenner, who received the guests in the premises in Obersontheim. They were not only given an introduction to the success story of the company, but also had a chance to visit the production halls and see many different products at various production stages. As an exclusive additional extra, the attachés from many different countries of the world had the opportunity to see the highly mobile compact TEP 90 decontamination system in action. In a presentation which lasted almost an hour, the Bruchsal NBC defence regiment demonstrated the large range of applications of the so-called Troop Disinfection, Detoxification and Radioactive Decontamination Site (TEP), the most modern system of its kind in the world. The product presentation was completed by a live demonstration of the water purification and water bottling systems at the future headquarters of Kärcher Futuretech in Schwaikheim near Winnenden. As the attachés observed how drinking water is prepared from the source to consumption, they were offered purified, bottled drinking water as refreshment in the great heat. Lieutenant Colonel (General Staff) Toby Schmitt, who accompanied the military attachés on their trip on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, was fascinated: “Military attachés are a very challenging audience for the company. Impressing attachés is not easy. But this is exactly what the company succeeded in doing during this visit.” One important contribution to this event was at least that the attachés could actively experience Swabian company culture, which the Head of Company, Hartmut Jenner, made a focal point of the company presentation. Extensive talks about this subject were, for example, possible during dinner, which was prepared in a Kärcher Futuretech field kitchen. New contacts were consolidated in an agreeable atmosphere in front of the farm house in the grounds of Hotel Sonnenhof in Kleinaspach (near Backnang). Kärcher Futuretech Managing Director Helmut Stelzmüller was pleased by the positive feedback: “We would be glad if the military attachés took their impressions from here to their home countries and let their people know about our state-of-the-art products. And I am quite sure, it won’t take us another 21 years to invite military attachés again to Swabia.” For further information, please visit www.kaercher-futuretech.com
