Scientifica Venture Capital invests in Aviogel

Aviogel has secured a €300,000 investment from Scientifica Venture Capital, a move that promises to bring transformative advancements to firefighting technology and environmental recovery. This investment marks Scientifica’s 15th addition to its portfolio and recognises Aviogel as one of the two standout start-ups from the Inverso acceleration programme, an initiative supporting innovative companies tackling pressing environmental challenges.

Aviogel’s technology introduces biodegradable hydrogel spheres that absorb water or other liquids, increasing their weight and allowing precise aerial deployment. This increased accuracy, achievable even from greater heights, minimises risk for pilots and boosts firefighting efficiency. Yet, Aviogel’s impact goes beyond mere fire suppression. Its hydrogel spheres are designed to support ecological regeneration by dispersing seeds or nutrients during firefighting, initiating reforestation efforts as soon as the fire is controlled. In this way, every aerial intervention becomes an act of environmental restoration as well as firefighting.

A significant part of Aviogel’s progression towards large-scale application will take place in the laboratories of Scientifica Venture Capital, a facility of over 4,000 m² dedicated to science and innovation. Here, Aviogel can accelerate its transition from concept to market-ready technology, leveraging Scientifica’s specialised resources and expertise to fine-tune and scale its operations.

In an era where climate change is intensifying wildfire occurrences, Aviogel’s approach offers a timely solution that supports both immediate crisis response and long-term ecological repair. Unlike traditional firefighting tools that concentrate on extinguishing flames without addressing environmental damage, Aviogel’s technology combines safety and ecosystem renewal, offering a holistic response to wildfires. This innovative approach has been lauded by William Carbone, Aviogel co-founder, who emphasises the dual mission of their technology: to protect against fires while fostering natural regeneration in affected areas.

Fellow co-founder Sevan Gerard, drawing on his experience as a firefighter and paramedic, underscores the value of Aviogel’s rapid, precise interventions in emergency scenarios. Gerard envisions Aviogel as a tool that not only saves lives but also lays the foundation for new life in fire-ravaged regions, bridging the gap between community safety and environmental restoration.

Riccardo D’Alessandri, managing partner of Scientifica Venture Capital, praises Aviogel’s combined effectiveness in firefighting and ecosystem preservation, noting its potential to reshape wildfire management practices. D’Alessandri highlights Aviogel’s forward-thinking, sustainable approach as essential to addressing the increasingly complex issues of wildfire control in a climate-conscious era.

Scientifica’s investment in Aviogel demonstrates its commitment to solutions that align environmental responsibility with market growth, underscoring that sustainable innovation can drive both profit and positive change. Aviogel’s technology has the potential to transform fire management, offering communities a sustainable and regenerative response to wildfires that mitigates the long-term impacts on devastated landscapes.
